Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections “Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox”
“It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.” — Buddha
At the moment, Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox is actually my favorite episode of this season. It felt like old times in many parts, close to the feeling that Robbie Thompson’s scripts gave me.
I loved Asa’s montage. Even though we got to know him only for like five minutes, I was sad that he got killed. But we got to know more about him, and at the same time more about the Winchesters, during the whole episode. It felt like a real treat. Shaine Jones played Asa brilliantly the short time he was on screen. Here is the whole story that we know of the character (from SupernaturalWiki).
Asa Fox was the son of Lorraine Fox, and a hunter with a reputation for being one of the best, purportedly having taken on and killed five wendigos in a single night. In 1997, Asa would become enemies with a particularly vicious crossroads demon named Jael, exorcising it back to Hell after killing the girl it was possessing. During a ghoul hunt in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Asa would meet Sheriff Jody Mills while impersonating an FBI agent, which Jody saw right through. The two would engage in a casual fling up until his death. After his death it was revealed that he was the father of hunter twins Alicia Banes and Max Banes.
It was a terrible way that the character died, but like the title of the episode said, how he died was not important – how he lived was, and he lived great from what we saw. Asa also had a great legacy with Alicia Banes (Kara Royster) and Max Banes (Kendrick Sampson), two characters who I and many others wish to see again on the show. The twins had a great dynamic. They were actually the first good witches on the show that combined witchcraft and hunting well. We got a good look at the family life of the Foxes.
We had also a huge cast in this episode. I mean, look at it: With the brothers we had Mary Winchester, Sheriff Jody Mills, Billie, Bucky Sims, Elvis Katz, Alicia Banes, Max Banes, Jael, Lorraine Fox and Asa Fox. All of the characters were interesting. Kim Rhodes was really great as Jody Mills. I have no doubt in my mind that she and Asa ‘hit it off’ at some point. Kim could also play evil – she was a pretty awesome demon if you don’t mind me saying it. So glad she lived! I will never stop fearing that they will eventually kill her off.
It is also my own fan canon (that might or might not be true because it is not confirmed) that Mr. Ketch was also at the wake as a hunter with a motorcycle. Nobody knew he was there. Hunters are not the most social people so it really could be possible. We finally also got the Winchesters to cross the border to Canada, so it was a milestone episode in that sense too. It left me wanting more insight into the hunter life in general and open to meet more hunters.
I chose the phrase conquer yourself to present the mood of the video. The twins did it by coming to the wake. Jody did it when she survived the demon and she let Sam and Dean keep her company. Sam mentioned that he won over Lucifer, and Dean got some help to get over his fear and extend a peace offering to Mary. Lorraine Fox also conquered her sorrow and took the step to get to know Asa’s children. Bucky Sims conquered himself and told the truth (even though it was forced out of him).
I hope you enjoy the video! You are in for a treat, which is fitting for such a great episode. I included (above) the two clips that really pulled me into the episode. The first is the montage of Asa from childhood to his death and the second is when the hunters arrive at the wake.

Paint It Black by Ciara
(Original by The Rolling Stones)
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors any more, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a newborn baby, it just happens every day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door I must have it painted black
Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts
It’s not easy facing up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors any more, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,..
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!
Hmm, hmm, hmm…

Quotes:
Dean: Oh, uh…Since the last time we saw you? I killed Hitler.
Jody: Oh… Thank you?
Dean: This is a real angel blade. This guy was legit.
Sam: Did you know people tell stories about us?
Dean: Yeah. Yeah, apparently we’re a little bit legendary.
Sam: You don’t have to explain anything. I get it. You need space, and so does Dean. You know? He’s just… We just got you back, and he’s just scared that we’re going to lose you again, that because we’re hunters you’re gonna walk away. But I know that’s not true. Even looking at these, you saved Asa in 1980. After Dean was born, after everyone thought you quit hunting. Seemed like you couldn’t stop then, and I’m guessing you can’t stop now either. This job. This life. It’s crazy and insane, but it’s in our blood.
Billie: The look in your eyes, I’ve seen it before. It’s a dead man’s look — eyes that say no matter where you go or what you do, it feels like this world doesn’t fit anymore, like you’re all alone.
Dean: Well, she’s not alone.
Billie: Tell me I’m wrong. I’m not here to hurt you. I’m here to offer you mercy. A one-way ticket upstairs, away from all of this.
Mary: How would it work?
Sam: Mom?
Mary: You just kill me again?
Billie: Reapers don’t kill people. Rules.
Mary: Well… then… Then I guess you’re just gonna have to wait.
Billie: Winchesters… If you change your mind — if any of you change your minds — you know my name.

Minutiae:
This is the first time the Winchesters have visited Canada, other than their Vancouver visit in the alternate reality shown in 6.15 The French Mistake.
Randy: No freakin’ way. Aren’t you dead? Like, four times?
Dean: Yeah. It, uh, didn’t take.Dean has in fact been dead or assumed dead four times in the series. First when he was killed by a hellhound in 3.16 No Rest for the Wicked, second was being shot by Walt and Roy alongside Sam in 5.16 Dark Side of the Moon, he was assumed dead by Sam after being sucked into Purgatory at the end of 7.23 Survival of the Fittest and being stabbed and killed by Metatron in 9.23 Do You Believe in Miracles?.
