Welcome to Season 15 discussion page! The introduction text at the start will always be the same and even though there are "no rules" there are some guidelines for these pages. These pages will be updated frequently when the material is available.

1. Site rules are also good guidelines for the discussion.
2. Use Spoilers! word at start if you have a new spoiler about an unaired episode that people can discuss. The updates show on the main page.
3. When the episode has aired Spoilers! is not needed.
4. For all, this is a page to analyze, speculate, discuss about the episode BUT do it past your good/bad personal opinion about the show, a character, story, writer, show runner or anything that is part of the show. Target is to keep the discussion going and fun for all. Also the ideas, speculation and episode analyzes I have heard really deserves a spot to get out.
5. All are welcome!
6. Everyone can participate by adding the rumors/spoilers they find.

Just a few things I need to write out. Thoughts and ideas...

About the ending... (Speculation)

Good ending: I had one thought how the show could end. It almost even makes sense but I am not sure if I want the show to end it that way although it would be happy.

By defeating Chuck and Winchesters surviving Jack would take his place as the new god. But because Chuck has written the whole story of Supernatural, the monsters and all that has happened would vanish. Leaving all of them in a normal world where there are no monsters, no demons and no angels. Making it this way the paradise. They would finally get that normal life and it would be different to every and each one. Castiel would guard the Winchesters from above. Sam would finish his studies and Dean would open that bar. They would be happy. And Jack would guard the whole world from above. THE END.

The bad:

It seems our Sam and Dean are the base creation. Chuck put himself in also to his creations so how about to defeat Chuck... The Winchesters need to loan specifically their soul power to Jack that he can defeat god. Or as Winchesters and the base of that world would die it would also destroy god. They are the harbingers as Billie said.

Random thoughts...

So death's books... They seem to be written beforehand but what if that is not really the case? Winchesters support free will and so did god if Winchesters did what he wanted. Now, not so much. What if Death IS the real advocate to free will. I think it was weird that Dean had many books on the library how he should die and then just ONE. What I gather is that the death book changed because free will. Their decision changed the outcome and rewrote the ending during their decisions unfold. Only god's death has one book because he doesn't have free will. He really has only one way to die and that is by the hands of Winchesters.

The old cemetery near Lillooet Rd in North Vancouver where they are (apparently) filming the last scene of Supernatural is the cemetery where Sam shot God..

Hollywood North Buzz - YVRShoots @yvrshoots Sep 10
The old cemetery isn't the last location for Supernatural. Location is much further up where public access is limited. The 3 km public road closes at 8 p.m. And they're beyond that on a private road.

You may be shooting your last day...helping to bring Supernatural across the finish line and into television history, but this is not... the End. Supernatural is a show about love, and the love that has been created within the story is eternal. Love between brothers, love between friends, love between co-stars...love for the crew, love for the fans, and love for each other. Thank you to everyone who is a part of this community and those who continue to share their love and talents with us all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀

My last day with #SamWinchester.

Obviously, my head is spinning and my emotions are stratospheric, but there’s still a bit of time left on the clock.

Thank y’all SO MUCH for the incredible amount of love and support that’s been headed our way, in these final hours.
It’s definitely been felt.

I’ll check in soon, but, for now,

Woke up at 6am this morning. That alarm went off with a heavy tone. Today is the final day of a 15 year journey. One that has changed my life forever. To those I have worked with on this journey and to those who have watched and supported...you will never understand my great appreciation for you. “Thank you” doesn’t cover it. There just aren’t words. I’m so grateful for these memories that I will carry with me forever. What a ride it has been. And what a run. #spnfamilyforever here are a few shots from our final days...including today. I’ll try and send more later, but in true SPN form...we are in the middle of “nowhere” and have zero service. Go figure. Stay tuned.

I don’t know what any of this means, but this is from the last scene on the last day of shooting. The boys are wearing the exact same outfits as they were in the pilot, baby has her original Kansas license plate, they’re on a bridge and have noticeable gray in their hair. Do with this information what you will. I’m having so many thoughts right now as to what this foreshadows.

Spoilers from TVLine

Supernatural EP: Series Finale Storyline Is 'Unchanged' Despite COVID Tweaks
By Vlada Gelman / September 17 2020

In August, star Jensen Ackles shared during a Zoom conversation that the show’s last two episodes underwent some tweaks, given that they were now being filmed during unprecedented times. “There have been some adjustments made from the scripts that we were going to shoot in March to the scripts that we’re shooting now,” Ackles said. “We’ve had to accommodate a pandemic.”

While COVID-19-related restrictions did result in some changes to the game plan, in the end, they “didn’t affect the core parts” of the final installments, co-showrunner Andrew Dabb recently told TVLine. “We’re still doing everything we wanted to do from a character, plot [and] mythology standpoint.”

“In some cases, we had to simplify the [pathways] to get there,” Dabb continued. “For example, for the finale, we had a big, super extravagant thing planned for that episode, and it wasn’t feasible. But we found an alternative to get to the same place, plot-wise and, more importantly, emotionally, that worked great. So it’s about being adaptable. We had to do some rewriting, but nothing that changed fundamentally what the show is or where it was going.”

So whether Dean and Sam live to hunt another day or wind up reuniting with their loved ones in Heaven or what have you, “the storyline [for the series finale] is unchanged,” Dabb reiterated. “Like I said, some of the scene work is different. There aren’t as many bad guys in a scene as we would normally have because of COVID restrictions. But in terms of plot, in terms of character, nothing is fundamentally different.”

‘Supernatural’ Producer Explains Why the Series Finale Will Be Even Better After Pandemic Delay from Cheatsheet.com
Fred Topel October 6, 2020

‘Supernatural’ may end with more intimacy than before
COVID-19 protocols include the crew working in separate pods and social distancing. This also meant there won’t be hordes of extras in the backgrounds of Supernatural series finale cenes.

“The biggest issue for us was basically number of extras and also [it was] much more difficult to travel people in from Los Angeles, as you’d expect,” Dabb said. “We’ve never changed our big ideas or where we’re going, but the path to getting there definitely did change. I think it worked out. I think it arguably changed for the better, but those were the changes we had to make. We didn’t make any big story changes. We didn’t make any character changes. It was a lot more staging and being very cautious about that. In a good way.”

Supernatural still ends the way Dabb planned, and he’s happy with the series finale, even without crowds.

“We got through, there were no positive tests, we got everything shot, everything ran smoothly so we’re happy with any of those changes,” Dabb said. “Like, I say, ultimately I think it may have been an improvement over what we originally had planned.”

You might miss some ‘Supernatural’ favorites due to travel restrictions
Supernatural tried to include every actor who was important to the show in its final season. The ones who were waiting for the series finale may have ended up not traveling to Vancouver, because they would have had to quarantine for two weeks just to shoot a cameo.

“Without getting into spoilers, there were a couple people we hoped to bring up for little bits and pieces,” Dabb said. “But, if somebody’s going to come up for half a day’s work, it’s not really fair to quarantine them for two weeks. So we had to make some changes, and then also, as always happens with episodes, especially the final episode, once you get into editing, certain things fall out or take up more time. So, I think it ended up being okay. Yes, the travel restrictions did hurt us.”

Some of the cameos still braved the quarantine
When the Supernatural series finale airs, we can discuss who did and didn’t appear. Without giving away the big cameos, Dabb said some fan favorites still made the effort to appear in the finale.

“There are a couple favorites you’re going to miss out on, although those favorites get moments to shine before the final episode,” Dabb said. “There are certainly a couple of favorites in the final episode and the final couple episodes that we did bring in. So, I don’t want to make it sound like we didn’t bring anybody in or you’re not going to see your favorite character, but at the end of the day, it became a matter of scale. You bring in the one or two people that are really important and you unfortunately can’t bring in the 10 people you would have liked to.”

Emily Aslanian

Hey there, SPN fans! Join us in our 15-day countdown to the series finale of Supernatural, featuring a look back with the cast (and guest stars!) at 15 seasons of demon-hunting and apocalypse-preventing, as well as exclusive content, sneak peeks, and more.

The below exclusive first look photo will also appear in TV Guide Magazine's November 9 tribute to Supernatural, available on newsstands November 5.

Let them eat pie! We don't know too much about the highly-anticipated series ender of Supernatural, but from the looks of it, the Winchester brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) will be enjoying a little slice of heaven as the show concludes!

In our exclusive first look at the series finale below, the demon hunters are enjoying a sweet treat, which is hopefully a victory slice after a long battle against God (Rob Benedict). Of course, we won't know for sure though until the episode comes along later this month on The CW. The final episode, "Carry On," airs November 19, at 9/8c, after an hourlong retrospective featuring cast and crew interviews (including Supernatural's original creator Eric Kripke), titled Supernatural: The Long Road Home at 8/7c.

Robert Singer on what to expect from Supernatural's series finale from the EW!
"It's a personal story," Singer says of the hour.
By Samantha Highfill November 16, 2020

Now the question is: What will the series finale look like?

"It was a lot of responsibility to make it as good an episode as it could possibly be," says co-showrunner Robert Singer, who also directed the final hour. "I think [co-showrunner] Andrew [Dabb] had written a really good script. It's a very emotional episode. It's a personal story, really, about the boys. The season myth really ends at [episode] 19 and this is a bit of a coda to that. It's really an actors' episode. The guys are great in it."

Singer goes on to say that, unlike many Supernatural episodes in the past, he didn't have to worry much about special effects in the finale, though he did note that there's one big stunt scene. "It was really the words on the page that were important in this one and I wanted to do them justice and felt a tremendous responsibility knowing it was the absolute last one. Everybody stepped up to the plate; I'm very happy with the episode. I hope the fans will respond to it. We wanted to give the show a real end, not do something that was enigmatic like The Sopranos, but really bring the show to a conclusion. I think we did that."

BRIAN TRUITT | USA TODAY | 38 minutes ago from USA Today!

After 15 years of CW’s “Supernatural,” Jensen Ackles admits that he and co-star Jared Padalecki aren’t very good at taking compliments or credit for the horror show’s epic run.

On their final day in Vancouver last September filming the series finale (Thursday, 9 ET/PT), when director Robert Singer called it a wrap and everybody else had walked off the set, the actors did something new: They basked in the moment.

“It was like, ‘We did this.’ That was pretty cool,'" Ackles recalls. “I mean, obviously we know that we didn't do it by ourselves, but it was really the first time that he and I looked at each other and (realized) we should be proud of what we've built here. Because it Is something to be proud of.”

Adds Padalecki: “It wasn't like, ‘Hey, look how awesome we are.’ It was like, ‘Hey, man, remember when we cried and we bled and we broke bones – literally? Remember all the alarm clocks when the sun wasn’t up yet?’ However this turns out, however it's received, we gave it everything.”

The last episode of “Supernatural,” which follows a retrospective special (8 EST/PST), finishes the story of monster-hunting brothers Sam (Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Ackles), who began their long, winding, apocalypse-filled quest after tragedy and have since taken on every foe that heaven, hell and everywhere in between has thrown at them, usually set to a rock tune. (The final episode’s title, “Carry On,” is a riff on the 1970s Kansas hit “Carry On Wayward Son,” which became the show’s unofficial theme song.)

Even without Emmy Awards, "Supernatural" has become a classic show – finding new fans through Netflix binges and TNT reruns – and a survivor, a final holdover from WB (which folded in 2007) that's outlasted many, many shows that have come and gone since its Sept. 13, 2005, premiere. Only a few prime-time network dramas have lasted longer, including "Grey's Anatomy" (which premiered six months earlier), "Law & Order: SVU" (1999) and "NCIS" (2003).

"Not surprisingly, as a 15-year-old show, 'Supernatural' is in some ways a little bit of an artifact of a different age of television," says executive producer Andrew Dabb.

Last week’s penultimate episode wrapped up the larger “Supernatural” mythology of angels and demons, as Sam and Dean outwitted God, aka Chuck (Rob Benedict), and their ally Jack (Alexander Calvert), the son of Lucifer and the new bearer of God’s power, said goodbye to the brothers after the world was saved.

The finale, in contrast, tells “a very personal story” centered on the Winchesters and is “really devoted to the relationship and the journey these guys have traveled,” says Singer, an executive producer on the show since its inception.

Singer adds that they eliminated certain ideas early: No “enigmatic" final shot a la “The Sopranos,” for example, or nothing out of left field like the 1988 "St. Elsewhere" finale, when the audience found out a boy with autism had imagined the entire series, visualized in a snow globe.

“We wanted it to feel like the end of a very long novel," Singer says. "It's pretty bold what we did and quite moving.”

Padalecki, 38, finds it “really powerful. And if you're not already crying by the last five or 10 minutes, then you don't have a soul. You don't have a heart.”

The stars have begun to move on – Padalecki to CW’s coming “Walker, Texas Ranger” reboot, and Ackles to Amazon’s “The Boys” – yet they’ve also brought a large piece of “Supernatural” home: Each got a black 1967 Chevy Impala used in the series as Dean’s beloved car, “Baby.” Ackles, 42, figures it was the second episode of the series “when I was like, ‘I’m getting a car. This car is not going to sit in a Warner Bros. lockup and get forgotten about. This car is coming home with somebody who's going to take care of it.’"

Ackles says he was “floored” by the gift: “And it's cool, because now Jared and I can just drag-race around Austin.”

“If we get pulled over, it'd be like, ‘Don't worry. FBI Agent Robert Plant,’" Padalecki adds.

“We've got FBI badges in the glove box,” Ackles confirms.

Down the road, Ackles would like people to talk about “Supernatural” the way he does about 1980s favorites like “The Goonies” or “Flight of the Navigator.”

“You show somebody a show or a movie like that now with all of the CGI and they're like, ‘Wow, the effects on this suck.’ And for me, I'm like, ‘That was amazing!’ I'm anxious to meet those people in 20 years when they're like, ‘Man, that show was such an epic part of my childhood’ or ‘I grew up with you guys’ or ‘I can't wait to show my kids that show when they're of age.”’

Padalecki says it might sound strange, but “I hope it's not remembered. I hope ‘Supernatural’ is continuously experienced and enjoyed and appreciated by all ages, all demographics, and so I hope it remains present.”

Just watched the last episode - I admit, I didn't do the team credit. After Inherit the Earth I was feeling a bit MEH. It played like a final episode, but a rather lack-lustre one. I didn't see where they could go with a final-final episode. Sorry guys, I did you wrong! I admit I am still wiping the tears away. In the very final scene, where they thanked their fans, I realised that this isn't a tv show like any other I've ever seen. It feels more like a family. I'm going to miss it very deeply. RIP boys.

‘Supernatural’ Finale: Why There Is Peace, Even Though the Winchesters Are Done from Variety
By Danielle Turchiano

For 15 seasons the Winchester brothers of the CW’s “Supernatural” put the rest of humanity’s needs ahead of their own, so it is only fitting that in their final episode they were still doing that same thing and ended up getting the “heaven [they] deserve.”

The series finale, “Carry On,” started as a throwback episode to the monster-of-the-week format of the drama’s earliest days, full of callbacks and references to what made audiences fall in love with the show — and the boys — in the first place. They may have been able to write their own story with Chuck (Rob Benedict) out of the picture, but that story still included the family business — even though it meant losing one of them. And for once, dead on “Supernatural” really, truly meant dead.

This time on this seemingly regular case, rescuing the next generation of brothers (with parallels to the young Winchesters, dragged into a life of the supernatural in their own way), Dean (Jensen Ackles) was impaled on a post and told Sam (Jared Padalecki) to stay with him, rather than call for help.

“You always knew it was always going to end like this for me,” said the man who survived having the archangel Michael inside him and going up against God himself.

As Dean was fading, he reminisced over the origins of the show by admitting to Sam that he didn’t know, when he showed up in California to pull his younger brother out of college and ask him to help him find their father, whether he’d tell him to “get lost or get dead.” And he told Sam he didn’t know what he would have done without him — a sentiment felt around the world as the #SPNFamily has been contemplating that very same thing as the end of the show has inched nearer.

Dean made it to Heaven — and the Heaven “it always should have been,” as Jack (Alexander Calvert) and Castiel (Misha Collins) reset things so those who had passed on could see loved ones again and make new memories, instead of traveling a road of their old ones. (It’s hard not to imagine who might have popped back up for one last cameo had COVID-19 not required two-week quarantines in Vancouver.) Meanwhile, Sam managed to build the life he had attempted the last time he thought Dean was gone for good, and when he grew old and sick his adult son (who he named Dean) echoed the words he had said once upon a time to his brother: “It’s OK, you can go now,” reuniting the Winchesters at long last.

Paying homage to the show’s beginning at the beginning of the series finale was not only a way to respect its origins and everyone who took a chance on it from the beginning, but it also served to drive home the selflessness of the Winchester family business’ motto of “saving people, hunting things.” There were times through the years where both Dean and Sam took brief detours from the life, but after defeating the vengeful God Chuck in the penultimate episode and being, in the words of Dean, “finally free,” they didn’t chuck it all and head to Vegas or sit by a lake drinking beers all day. They climbed back into Baby and got right back on the road to do what they do best.

Other, less dedicated characters and shows wouldn’t have done that. These guys, after all, could have theoretically done anything. The show could have even ended with that penultimate episode, “Inherit the Earth,” leaving the audience on an image of the boys driving down a long, open road but having to make up in their own minds (and fan fiction) what became of their lives in a universe where the new God Jack was their friend but also the spawn of Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino).

Instead, driving down that open road brought them back to their roots. And driving down an open road in Heaven bookended the series, as Dean once again picked up Sam, this time not from Stanford but in the afterlife.

Supernatural -- "Carry On" -- Image Number: SN1520A_BTS_0306r.jpg -- Pictured: Behind the scenes with Jared Padalecki -- Photo: Cristian Cretu/The CW -- © 2020 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved.
It was poignant that Dean and Sam jumped back into the regular hunting life after facing down the greatest cosmic being they ever would. Neither one of them questioned the job, nor seemed to feel resigned to or reluctant about it. Although the show started with Sam desperately trying to leave his unconventional childhood behind him as he attended Stanford, and although both Winchester men attempted “apple-pie” lives at various points in the series, they both came to accept, claim and truly choose their life’s work.

And what amazing work it was. Aside from the countless lives they have actually saved over the years (that is math too high for this writer to feel confident about), they also managed to make a chosen family, not only bringing together people who would otherwise never cross paths but making them care so deeply for each other they were willing to put themselves in harm’s way, if not downright sacrifice themselves, for each other.

Between the other hunters, such as Bobby (Jim Beaver), Eileen (Shoshannah Stern), or Ellen and Jo (Samantha Ferris and Alona Tal, respectively); every day people who, after being helped by the Winchesters, became a part of that hunter network too, from Jody (Kim Rhodes) to Charlie (Felicia Day); Castiel, and other other-worldly beings including Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and Rowena (Ruth Connell) who came in handy from time to time, the Winchesters’ world expanded greatly from their lonely childhood of growing up on the road with mostly only each other as company as dad (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was off on a hunt.

And let’s look at some of the most recent and most emotional sacrifices a little more closely. Most notably, in order to save Jack, Castiel made a deal to give himself back to the Empty, a place deemed worse than Hell. The real rub was that he would be yanked there at a time of pure happiness on Earth. In the third to last episode of “Supernatural,” Castiel verbally acknowledged that he loved Dean — and humanity in general — and, despite also saying he realized what would make him happy was something he could never truly have, it was enough for the Empty to come calling.

In a way, Jack, too, sacrificed himself. After absorbing the power radiating off of Lucifer and Michael (Jake Abel), he was strong enough to also take Chuck’s power — which also meant taking Amara (Emily Swallow). As he became the new all-mighty being, he walked away from his life with the Winchesters into the great unknown. After all, he noted, when Chuck put himself in the story things didn’t turn out so well.

Realistically, given everything the show has depicted for 15 seasons about power corrupting humans who learned spells or summoned demons to make deals, to say nothing of angels and other other-worldly beings as well, the series finale could have jumped a number of years into the future to show that Jack, too, had to be taken down. However, not only would that have required a whole lot of exposition to cram into a 40-odd minute episode, it would have undone so much of the messaging the show imparted in the most recent years: The Winchesters may have started out saving people and hunting things, but along the way some of those things proved to be worth saving, too. And there is something both extremely hopeful and poetic to leave on that note, even if it didn’t work out with everyone (cough, Jenny, cough).

But even more poetic was the Winchesters’ reunion in Heaven. Being decked out in the clothes they wore when they first reconnecting 15 years ago was one thing, but the idea that NOW they were finally free after years of dedicating their lives for others was … well, I haven’t quite found the words yet, which is what I shouldn’t admit as a writer.

For 15 years they formed a bond amid fire — often literally — and now they can sit back with each other and enjoy a relationship free of danger around every corner. They can see all of their lost loved ones again and make some new friends along the way — friends that, for once, they don’t have to fear losing. They can rest knowing they left a better world behind, simply for being in it.

Ever since “Supernatural” first used Kansas’ “Carry on Wayward Son” at the end of the first season, it became an anthem for the #SPNFamily, and hearing it — and multiple renditions of it — in the series finale was emotional all on its own. There was a lot to love about the song, starting with the connection that the name of the band was the Winchesters’ home state. But personally the lyrics always felt foreboding. Sure, there were some poetically perfect parallels in there, including “On a stormy sea of moving emotion/Tossed about I’m like a ship on the ocean,” and singing that “there’ll be peace when you are done” certainly always implied that the world would be a better place when they were able to finish their work, vanquishing all the monsters. But as the Winchesters’ faced down more formidable foes season after season, from Azazel (Fredric Lehne) to Lucifer to Abaddon (Alaina Huffman), the Mark of Cain and God himself, it often began to feel like their work wouldn’t be done unless they sacrificed themselves. And how could there be peace then? A world without Winchesters, as “Supernatural” depicted with in its 13th season, was literally apocalyptic.

Outside of the show, the longer it ran, the more invested we became in our heroes and it equally became hard to imagine feeling peace when they were gone from our lives, meaning when the show came to an end. Announcing the final season months ahead of its premiere on the CW — and announcing that it was their choice to end the show — offered opportunity to get used to the idea of being without Dean and Sam and the show in general. The COVID-19 pandemic pausing their production and pushing their final batch of episodes to the end of the year gave even more time for that — and the unexpected hiatus was also a taste at what it would be without the show in our lives.

In that time I, a self-proclaimed dumb-dumb (for lack of better word, but perfectly capturing the tone) when it comes to music, listened to “Carry on Wayward Son.” A lot. I probably heard it more times in the months between April and November 2020 than I had ever before in my life. And I finally learned to stop fixating on the parallel I was drawing from “peace when you are done” to the literal of the show ending because of course Kansas, releasing the song in 1976, was not telling me things would be better when “Supernatural” was over.

The song overall is about a search for meaning, and “Supernatural” was a source of meaning for so many people, myself included in at least one essential way. It’s also about resilience — to keep looking for that meaning and, to borrow a term from Padalecki, to “always keep fighting.”

So instead, I thought about the journey “Supernatural” took me on: being my first entry into the world of entertainment journalism on a professional level, which effectively introduced me to some of my closest friends and some pretty amazing people in the industry in general; being the reason I traveled to Canada for the first-ever time; showing me the perfect portrait of leadership and selflessness, and reigniting my passion for psychology while simultaneously making me care more about genre programming than I ever thought I would.

And then I thought about the journey of “Supernatural” in a broader sense: how it grew from a show on the brink of cancelation into the longest-running broadcast genre series, even surviving the end of its original network; how it connected millions of people around the world who found friendship, solace, support and sometimes even romance in each other; how those same people banded together to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for numerous charities; how it gave breaks to previously unknown talent both in-front-of and behind-the-camera, all of whom, thanks to the leadership of the Nos. 1 and 2 on the call sheet, took a sense of graciousness, passion, intense dedication but also pure fun to their next jobs as they spiderwebbed out across film and television.

For 15 years “Supernatural” was comfort but it was also revolutionary and, though it may be done now, there is peace because it existed at all.

Eric Kripke says Supernatural ending is 'the right one': Fans 'would’ve hated my ending!' from EW!
The show creator reveals there's only one scene he never got to write for the end of the show.

By Samantha Highfill November 19, 2020

Well, Supernatural family, we finally know how Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean's (Jensen Ackles) story ends. In the show's final hour — its 327th episode in total — Dean Winchester died. And so did Sam. Let's back up: When a standard vampire hunt went wrong, Dean was impaled on a nail. As a result, he died in his brother's arms. Sam then went on to live a full life with a wife and a son named Dean before he eventually died of old age. Sam and Dean were then reunited in the new heaven, where Jack (Alexander Calvert) made some necessary improvements: No more walls, and you don't have to live solely in memories. The final shot of the series saw the brothers, together, happy.

So what did show creator Eric Kripke think of the ending? First, let's remember where Kripke's story ended. "In my last episode, 'Swan Song,' I probably, in hindsight foolishly, spent maybe like 80 percent of how I wanted that show to end. I didn't know it was going to go 15 years. I probably wouldn't have done that again had I had another chance but I thought maybe there was another year or two! Outside of a few little scenes and a few more moments, that was the meat of where I thought this show should end, which is Sam versus Dean and then ultimately good versus evil but brotherhood wins and sacrifices are made."

When the show didn't end in another year or two, Kripke says, "From that point forward, it's inevitable that over many years, the show is going to spend every idea I had in terms of where it could go or end. By the time they reach this ending, it's not like I had some preconceived notion of how it should end. I was completely open-minded to what the gang was cooking up."

So how did he feel about the final pitch? "I had a long talk with Jensen [Ackles] about it and I had a long talk with [co-showrunners] Andrew [Dabb] and Bob [Singer] about it and I think it's the best possible ending for the show. It was interesting, they pitched it to me and I went off to think about it for a couple days, and admittedly, me being me, I spent some time thinking, 'Okay, is there any other ending I would pitch back that I think is better?' And I spent a couple days trying to chase down a couple avenues and couldn't come up with anything better. So I went back and I was like, 'Guys I think it's the right one.' There's some substance to it but there's something emotional, I think there's a positive energy around it."

"I will say this," continues Kripke. "There's only one scene that I haven't done that I would've done for the end of the show and I'm certainly not going to give it away, maybe one day I will. But I can assure the fans that my ending was so much darker than the ending they're going with, so anyone who's like, 'Kripke should've ended it,' I'm like, 'You would've hated my ending!' Because it was a horror movie and it was going to have a horror movie ending, so I can promise you the ending [they went with] you'll love much more than if you had let me end the show."

Supernatural's Jared Padalecki shares his reaction to the 'tragic' and 'optimistic' finale from EW! (video)
By Samantha Highfill November 19, 2020

In 2005, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki made the drive up to Vancouver to start filming on the second episode of Supernatural. 15 years later, with a U-Haul full of stuff, they made the trip back across the border.

"It was right during all the wildfires, so the sky was really weird," says Jared Padalecki of the recent drive. "It felt like a Supernatural episode or something. We crossed the border together and it just felt like a pretty poignant meaningful full-circle [moment]."

In a new interview, EW talks with Padalecki about the decision to end the long-running series — which he says he and Ackles came to during filming season 13 — and what it was like to actually read the ending. "I think I cried every time I read the script," Padalecki says.

That being said, Padalecki is "100 percent" on board with the way the series wraps up, calling the story both "wonderfully tragic" and "wonderfully optimistic."

At the end of the day, he says "I feel really proud to have been a part of this."
