This is fantastic.  Between the streaming light and the set full of stuff and Sam working the summoning spell on the floor, this shot is all kinds of awesome.

Apparently, I really am all about the inanimate objects in this episode.  I love the way this poker table is staged here, with the chips slightly strewn about and the whisky bottle framing the shot there.  It's like a "Supernatural" still life.  They just need a gun and some salt and some holy water on the table and they're set.

I really like the lighting on knocked-out Sam here, with the light streaming in and flaring on his face especially.  Lovely.  And his arms all askew like that is quite enjoyable, too.

11.

This is just a sumptuous shot.  The angle is brilliant, and I love how the left part of the shot is pretty much black, and how there's a real blue undertone to the rest of the coloring.

I'm sure by now you can all guess what I'm going to say about this shot, but the lighting!  Oh, the lighting!  Just look at the contrast between the lighting on Dean and Tessa and in the rest of the scene with the doctors in the background.  They're all florescent and lit up while Dean and Tessa are in the ever-popular broken blue-light stream.  It really helps hammer home that they are shadow participants in the real world.

I really, really liked that Dean knelt down to talk to this girl.  It's such a very Dean thing to do, since we all know he's great with kids.  Seriously, lowering yourself to a child's level or further does wonders, especially if you have to deliver tough news.

Death is such an amazing character because of moments like this, when Dean turns the corner and sees him feeding his face with junk food and drinking beer out of a plastic cup.  He's the world's most powerful frat boy.

I really like how this shot is framed with the soul light and Dean and Bobby standing in the background.  And Death totally went from world's most powerful frat boy to world's scariest housecall doctor.  That's pretty impressive.

So there we have it.  I felt like there was a lot of conversations and face-to-face dialogue, so there wasn't as much room to play with the pretty this time around.  Still, there were some lovely shots in this episode all the same.  And for the first time, I am going to pick my top three favorites.  Drumroll... I like 5, 9, and 11 best, in that order.  11 is my favorite for this episode.  Congratulations, shot 11!  What are your favorites?

Loved them all but my favourite was number 1 simply because when I first saw the shot when the ep aired I went "Ooh, I know where that is - Chinatown!" In fact, I've been in that very shop Dean went into!

Oh Yay! The visual reviews are back!

My favorite is #11, just because Sam, even as RoboSam, just looks so beautiful, vulnerable yet frightening, all in one.

Second fav is #13. I like how Dean is kneeling, it almost looks like he is petitioning her, and the fall of the girls hair so it hides her face, it leaves the answer to his petition a guesswork. It's either beautiful or creepy, depending on how you look at it.

Glad you got this up Arde! Makes the wait for Friday that much easier. :-)

No, Flamey,we, or well: I , haven't forgotten, just thought you'd be really busy but would come around with it soon. hey, you went to a con. perfect to absorbe one's mind.

As always, I love your choices, dear. I think the impala outside that worn-down building - isn't that the same building the used in CHanging Channels?

My faves are No 11, a moment where Soulless Sam actually came across as a possible human, yet other than Sam, being. 'He want that other guy back. Doesn't care about me.'

But I also like the Whiskeybottle shot, and the last one, with the light of his soul coming out of the bag and enlightening the room. Very Lord of the Rings, here.

Thanks again for this fun piece, Flamey!!
Love, , Jas

Hi Ardeospina
I’m so glad you remembered and found the time to put this together.
I always enjoy your visual reviews.
My favourites are 9, 11 and 14.
#9 for all the same reasons as yours
#11 Because Sam really looks so sad and regretful.
#14 I love the lighting in this one. The way the sunrays are shining through the back windows and reflecting on the floor. I also love how the table still has the poker game in play and Death is so casually sitting and eating like this is all normal.

Btw if you found Dean’s combination of upper and lowercase amusing, you should see mine. Not only do I combined upper and lower, I also bring in a mixture of printing and cursive. It’s not pretty!

I like the starkness of 6 and the long-shot in the warehouse of 8 because they both fit the emotion of the moments so well. 11 is really awesome. What can I say? Sammy looks good in blood!

As usual Ard, a wonderful recap.

I like #5 the best because we did get to see more of Bobby's property. But there was the sound of the train in the background. I don't think that was something that was added in post-production , that was something that happened while filming. It was one of those happy coincidences that gave added depth to the scene.

Perfect timing on this one, Ardeospina. (You didn't really forget, you were just saving it to whet our appetite for 6. 12!)

I love No. 13, not just for Dean kneeling the whole kneeling down to the kids level but because of the little grin he gives her at the end. He doesn't sugarcoat what happened or lie to her. Nice, Dean.

Also loving No. 11. Just the angles, and the shadows and the angles... Plus the contrast between the look of defeat on his face teamed with the crowbar in this hand. Fab.

Finally, no. 15, mainly for what it symbolises; Welcome back, Sammy!
