#6 - Dean's Death Montage "“ "Mystery Spot"
This is a prime example of why Supernatural is so great. Death can be funny. The genius behind this show tapped into comedic gold just by killing off one of the two leads again, and again, and again. They just had to do so with all sorts of cartoonish ways. Then, they even figured out how to make the psychological torture that Sam goes through hilarious as well.
The underlying concept is simple. Dean dies, and Sam wakes up, and it's Tuesday all over again. Oh, but Sam just doesn't wake up. He wakes up to Asia. Heat Of The Moment. With Dean saying "Rise and Shine Sammy" before taunting his brother by turning up the music and lipsynching the words. And we thought Sonny and Cher's I Got You Babe in the Groundhog Day movie was disturbingly funny. That had nothing on the Winchester boys.
How many creative ways can Dean Winchester possibly die? Apparently enough to keep us rolling hard in this two minute quick sequence, each death followed by Sam's abrupt wake up call to the afore mentioned bad 80's hair band song. We didn't think they could top Dean's wickedly gruesome demise when he was crushed by a desk a la Wile E Coyote, so this sequence had to prove us wrong. Even Sam's reactions are priceless, ending with him in a full blown tizzy, bearing an axe, tearing apart the Mystery Spot, and ultimately causing another one of Dean's deaths.
So, is your favorite death of the episode in this scene? Mine was the accidental axing and the brilliant way it all played off camera. I miss Kim Manners.

And all I can do is laugh remembering Jensen at a con, when someone offered their favorite death as the one by taco, protesting "But you never even saw me die that time!"
This was a magnificent episode. And like you, I miss Kim Manners. I remember hearing Jared and Jensen talk about filming this episode, with Jared noting that they block-shot everything (meaning that they shot all of the scenes in the same locales back to back, one right after the other, so all of Sam's waking up scenes just followed each other, and ditto with all of Dean's lip-synching scenes and the ones gargling in the bathroom), and that what made it all work was Kim telling them exactly where they were in the timeline each time, so that Jared could connect emotionally with where on the emotional continuum Sam would be. That was anything BUT easy ... and absolutely brilliant.
Ah Kim Manners - "He left a hole and it hurts so bad you can't take it." - Sam, Bloodlust
I love the Trickster, I really hope he shows up again later. It's nice to have a Monster Of The Week with a bit of a brain rather than the usual Raaargh-you're- lunch variety.
Maybe you could do a top 10 favorite Evil Doers list sometime ... Hmmn? (does puppy eyes)
