Men all

After I made "A Tribute to the Kick-Ass Women of Supernatural" and part 2 , I wanted to write a similar article about men. I value both in Supernatural because the show has some of the most remarkable guest actors and actresses, so the loss of both are deeply felt. I decided to use the same criteria as I had in my first article. I chose the male characters that had a great impact on me and were also Badass on their own accord.

A few have passed away but a few are still alive and kicking. Supernatural's men, women, children and even animals don't usually "live to see another day". If they do, then they lose or have lost a family member. The rule is that everybody dies - even the main cast. I am happy that some survive and sad when some are lost. If you make it out alive in a Supernatural episode, it's a miracle.

Strength comes in many ways, whether it is a father's, brother's or son's love for one another or strength to go against all odds and do the right thing against what ever the cost would be. Their strength could also be to live on when they are struck by great grief or loss and they feel they can't. These men did that and more.

"What is my prefered Badass man" you ask? You might say that I don't have the usual taste in them. The ones I prefer are strong in both body and mind and they are formidable fighters. My fangirl crushes are mostly on bad guys. My idols are Dwayne Hicks (Aliens), Kyle Reese (Terminator 1), Ares (Xena the Warrior Princess), Jon Snow (Game of Thrones) Alex Krycek (X-Files), Charles Vane (Black Sails), for example. So you might see a resemblance in my  taste on that list. Some of them are clear choices that we all remember and some of them not so much.

For Supernatural, Sam and Dean are both ruled out because they are the leads, but that doesn't mean that they are not the most badass of them all.

I have divided the men into 6 categories. By the way, for me it was much easier to find kick-ass women than men. I don't know if it says something about me or the show.

Robert Steven "Bobby" Singer   *Jim Beaver, Collin MacKenchie (Young Bobby in 7.10)

Family don't end in blood

It is hard to imagine that if things had gone different with Missouri Moseley's actress, we would not have gotten Bobby Singer. He kept the boys in line but also supported them when they needed it. He also was there to call them idjits when they were planning to do something stupid. The past that was told to us about him was tragic. His father was a beater and to protect his mother and himself, young Bobby killed his father. Bobby's wife got possessed, so at the time he had no choice other than to kill her. He didn't want to have children because he was afraid he was going to be like his father. Instead he was just the opposite and he realized that he did great. He brought up two heroes.

"Uh-huh. Well, as fate would have it, I adopted two boys, and they grew up great. They grew up heroes. So you can go to hell! – 7.10 Death's Door

Castiel  *Misha Collins, Sydney Imbeau (4.20)

Family don't end in blood

Castiel 1

The introduction of Castiel was almost as badass as the one for Death. First, you didn't know if the one that helped Dean up from Hell was a good guy or a bad guy. We found out that his host (vessel) was valiant and willing to make a sacrifice so he couldn't be that bad. Castiel has made mistakes like any normal human. Some of his are pretty bad, but he has also helped and in crucial moments kept the Winchesters safe. Depending which way you look at it, he has shown either great strength or great weakness. Most importantly, he is very different from his siblings and that is only a good thing. I do hope that he does realize his value and will become a formidable fighter again.

John Eric Winchester
*Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matthew Cohen (Young John), Nels Gulofen (Child John)

John 1

John Winchester taught his sons to fight and to fear the things in the dark because the stories were true. Was he driven by revenge? Yes, but in the situation he was in he did the best he could. Who in Supernatural hasn't made mistakes? They all have. To forgive and move forward is better than dwell always on the past. When Dean's life was at stake, John finally learned there is something more valuable than revenge, although Dean would not like the way John would show it. All in all, John wanted to keep his boys safe above all else but he was an ordinary human so he was also afraid. Like others, he should not have been pushed to make the decisions he made but he had no choice.

"You gotta understand somethin'. After your mother passed, all I saw was evil. Everywhere. And all I cared about was, was keepin' you boys alive. I wanted you prepared. Ready. So somewhere along the line I uh, I stopped being your father, and I, I became your, your drill-sergeant. So when you said that you wanted to go away to school, all I could think about, my only thought was, that you were gonna be alone. Vulnerable. Sammy it just, it never occurred to me what you wanted. I just couldn't accept the fact that you and me... we're just different." – 1.20 Dead Man's Blood

Samuel Campbell  *Mitch Pileggi

Samuel 1

Mary's father was not a mere hunter to be trifled with (and Dean found out that the hard way), but he was not prepared for the Yellow Eyed Demon. Samuel was the vessel that started all the hardships that later came to pass. We still don't know how he was resurrected, but he was not driven by revenge but love for the family he knew. He wanted Mary back and Crowley promised him that. Did he care about her sons? Not really, but he was a tough cookie. Also, it was a shame that he was killed so suddenly. He was not right on what he did but love is a better reason in my book than revenge.

"Oh, I know a few things. Stick around, I'll show you tricks your daddy never even dreamed of."

Henry Winchester  *Gil McKinney

Henry 1

A loving father to wanted to do good. He looked down on Sam and Dean at first when he heard they were hunters but when he found out he never returned back to his family and that they were his grandsons, his opinion changed. Also, he saw that combining MOL and being a hunter was a good thing. He was wise and strong. He sacrificed himself that they could get Abaddon and loosing him struck the brothers pretty badly. Maybe his legacy continues and the other MOL will see the error of their ways - that they indeed don't know everything?

"You're more than that, actually. My father and his father before him were both Men of Letters, as John and you two should have been. We're preceptors, beholders, chroniclers of all that which man does not understand. We share our findings with a few trusted hunters – the very elite. They do the rest." – 8.12 As Time Goes By

2. Angels

Supernatural - Evil Angel made by Asmothesly's channel

Gadreel, Ezekiel  *Tahmoh Penikett and Jared Padalecki

Gadreel2 1

Following in Castiel's footsteps, Gadreel's intentions often ended up as huge mistakes. He, like Castiel, didn't really fit the mold of angels but he didn't know how to be human either or to have a conscience until later, when it was already too late. He survived many years in Heaven's prison and against the torture. For some reason, neither sounds like a stroll on a park. His strong presence was mostly made real by none other than the two marvelous actors who played him. As his character grew, he knew the error of his ways in the end and he decided to pay the ultimate price for it.

"I sat in this hole for thousands of years thinking of nothing but redemption, of reclaiming my good name. I thought of nobody, no cause other than my own... The only thing that matters in the end is the mission: protecting those who would not and cannot protect themselves. The humans. None of us is bigger than that, we will not let our fears, our self-absorption prevent us from seeing it through. Not anymore... Move to the other side of your cell Castiel, and keep your head down. When they say my name, perhaps I won't just be the one who let the Serpent in, perhaps I will be known as one of the many that gave Heaven a second chance." – 9.23 Do You Believe in Miracles?

Gabriel, Trickster, Loki  *Richard Speight Jr.

Gabriel 1

At first, he was the Trickster and then he was revealed to be the archangel Gabriel. Even though his plan was fun and games, it doesn't mean that those games were not the worst to those who were afflicted by them. Gabriel wanted to teach people a lesson and Sam and Dean were no different. It would be great to find out who his vessel was. In the end, Gabriel lost his strength when he went full out against his brother even if it was the right thing to do. His tricks were over in that moment but people still have hope that he will return.

"Shut your cake hole. You don't know anything about my family. I love my Father, my brothers. Love them. But watching them turn on each other? Tear at each other's throats? I couldn't bear it! Okay? So I left. And now it's happening all over again." – Gabriel, 5.08 Changing Channels

Known status: Deceased

Seen: As The Trickster: 2.15 Tall Tales, 3.11 Mystery Spot and As Gabriel: 5.08 Changing Channels, 5.19 Hammer of the Gods, 9.18 Meta Fiction

Balthazar  *Sebastian Roché

Another angel who knew how to survive but also got killed when doing the right thing. Balthazar was a rascal but he did have a heart in the right place. He valued Castiel over the Winchesters until he heard what his friend had been up to. Standing against your friend when you know he is doing a very bad thing is the ultimate sacrifice and strength. To try to show him the error of his ways is a difficult task. He did not succeed in that moment but he did try.

"The footsteps I'm following, they're yours. What you did, stopping the big plan, the prize fight. You did more than rebel. You tore up the whole script and burned the pages for all of us. It's a new era. No rules, no destiny. Just utter and complete freedom." – 6.03 The Third Man

Michael  *Matthew Cohen (5.13) and Jake Abel (5.22)

Michael 1

Only seen in two episodes, but he made a lasting impression both times. Being the good son and following dad's orders wasn't what made him badass. Instead, he was damned scary torching Anna just like that (and so easily), and he didn't react at all when he was torching his sister. Also, he got in John and used him in that moment shows that Michael was calculating and dangerous. He had a purpose. I am not sure I want this being out of the cage if his state of mind is what it is said to be, because I could see him be even more dangerous than Lucifer or The Darkness herself.

"Stretching back to Cain and Abel. It's in your blood, your father's blood, your family's blood." – 5.13 The Song Remains the Same

Known status: Alive-ish

Seen: 5.13 The Song Remains the Same and 5.22 Swan Song

Samandriel aka Alfie  *Tyler Johnston

He was one of the good guys, trying to find Castiel and defending him even knowing Castiel had made mistakes. Samandriel lasted a long while against the torture that was inflicted upon him and still he tried to get word to Castiel and the Winchesters that the minds of the angels had been tampered with by Naomi. Unfortunately, Cas was ordered by Naomi to kill this sweet angel. The good angels don't last long now do they?

Samandriel 1

"Samandiriel: You know that there are some in Heaven that believe, despite his mistakes, that Castiel's heart was always in the right place.
Dean: Are you one of them?
Samandiriel: I think too much heart was always Castiel's problem." – 8.02 What's Up, Tiger Mommy?
