4. Mothers

Mothers

Ellen Harvelle - Samantha Ferris

Ellen was a mother figure for all the hunters. As few other women on this list she had lost a husband to the Supernatural. Her daughter had lost a father. She was also a guiding figure for the boys. Loosing a character like Ellen stung a lot.

"You mind your tongue with me, boy. This isn't just your war, this is war. Now, something big and bad's coming and it's coming fast, and their side holds all the cards. Now, at best all we got is us. Together. No secrets or half-truths here."

Linda "Mama" Tran - Khaira Ledeyo, Lauren Tom

A strong mother that suffered a loss. Does everything for her son.

"He's my son. It's my job to keep him safe for as long as I can."

Known status: Alive and kicking

Lisa Braeden - Cindy Sampson

She knew what Dean did as a profession and tried to live normal life with him and supporting him where needed. Giving Dean the most normal life he has ever had to this day. Being normal in Supernatural is strength itself.

"Dean, if there's some rule that says this all has to be either/or, how about we break it? Me and Ben will be here, and you come when you can. Just come in one piece, okay?"

Mary Winchester - Samantha Smith, Amy Gumenic

Her family was the most important for her and her wanting to save the man she loved was the first deal in the Winchester family. It started everything. Even if she was dead she fought for and protected her family.

"I wanna get out. This job, this life, I hate it. I want a family, I wanna be safe. You know the worst thing I can think of? The very worst thing? Is for my children to be raised into this like I was. No, I won't let it happen."

5. Supernatural

Supernatural

Naomi - Amanda Tapping

She only wanted to keep heaven safe and did anything to do it. In the end when it was too late she turned to tell the truth to Cas and the Winchesters but they didn't listen. I would call Naomi strong strategist and leader. And she stood up against Crowley.

"Our mission was to protect what God created. I don't know when we forgot that. I want nothing more than to see you shut the Gates of Hell, but I told you that you could trust me. If Sam completes those trials, he is going to die."

Lenore - Amber Benson

Fought against her nature and wanted to make a new life for her followers. Vampires that wouldn't hurt people. When Eve turned up Lenore rather died than turned back to something she didn't want to be.

"Survival. No deaths, no missing locals, no reason for people like you to come looking for people like us. We blend in. Our kind is practically extinct. Turns out we weren't quite as high up the food chain as we imagined."

Known status: Deceased

Seen: 2.03 Bloodlust, 6.19 Mommy Dearest

Tessa - Lindsey McKeon

Voice of reason for those that had passed and should move on. Wise and one of those threats that the boys take seriously. Reaper that in the end cared too much.

"I've been around death from the get-go. You know what I see most? Lies. 'He's in a better place. At least they're together now.' You all lie to yourselves, Dean, 'cause like you said, deep down, you're all scared. Stop lying to yourself, Dean."

Known status: Deceased

Seen: 2.01 In My Time of Dying, 4.15 Death Takes a Holiday, 6.11 Appointment in Samarra, 9.22 Stairway to Heaven

Madison - Emmanuelle Vaugier

She held on but when she found out she would be werewolf for the rest of her days she made the choice for the greater good and was killed by Sam as requested that she wouldn't harm any more people.

"I don’t wanna die. I don’t. But I can’t live like this. This is the way you can save me. Please. I’m asking you to save me."

Known status: Deceased

Seen: 2.17 Heart

6. Humanity

Humanity

Sarah Blake - Taylor Cole

Very likable and a strong woman. Decided to help and fight with Sam and Dean. She lived forward in an ordinary life until Crowley pulled her back to the Supernatural. She still tried to defend her life against Crowley to her ultimate end.

"You're joking... You're not joking. God, the guys I go out with."

Known status: Deceased

Seen: 1.19 Provenance, 8.22 Clip Show

Layla Rourke - Julie Benz

She was fighting against cancer and having hope and faith that she would find a cure. The brothers getting a way of the healing could have made her blame Dean but she didn't and she remained even stronger than those beside her.

“I guess if you're going to have faith you can't just have it when the miracles happen.”

Known status: Deceased or by miracle alive and kicking

Seen: 1.12 Faith

Mara Daniels - Bridget White

Career woman and as a lawyer she decides to believe Dean and Sam. She seems to see that Dean is really telling the truth. In a cunning way and what wouldn't incriminate her she guides the police to wrong cemetery.

"I talked to a cop in Baltimore who swears up and down these boys saved her life and helped her catch a killer. And there's a witness to your bank robbery in Milwaukee. She swears Sam and Dean saved her life."

Known status: Alive and kicking

Seen: 2.19 Folsom Prison Blues

Tara - Rachel Hayward

Strong experienced hunter who would win men in arm wrestle or in battle. She is also wise and tries to speak sense to Dean that doesn't work. Unfortunately she was lost as fast as we got to know her.

"Devil's trap under the knock-off Persian, jackass."

Known status: Deceased

Seen: 9.11 First Born

Tina - Kehli O'Byrne, Madeleine Arthur (Young Tina)

She has made mistakes but when she is given a new chance she decides to take it and learn from her past.

"What wasn't? You're in here getting stunned until the sun comes up, your life is a regular Charlie Foxtrot."

Known status: Alive and kicking

Seen: 10.12 About a Boy

Missouri Moseley - Loretta Devine

Smart and witty and has her own talent that makes her special. Missouri is also a character that was used more in Supernatural the Anime and Supernatural: Origins.

Missouri was originally meant to appear in the season one finale, but scheduling conflicts forced the production to create a new character, Bobby Singer, as a fill in.

"Boy, you see me sawin' some bony tramp in half? You think I'm a magician? I may be able to read thoughts and sense energies in a room but I can't just pull facts outta thin air!"

Known status: Alive and kicking

I really miss Missouri. I was shocked she wasn't used much in the live action. I'd really like to see her come back :)

Yeah, I heard they were going to use that character more and it is a shame they didn't. Can't blame them for Bobby Singer though.

Missouri was used more in the animation and her "powers" also. :)

Great look at the women of SPN. There have been some good ones over the years. :)

True that and not all were not on the tribute. I wish also for many more that we have gotten. Hopefully to the "Alive and kicking" category of course.

Wow, with the possible exception of Tina (who I don't remember at all) this is a totally excellent reminder of the kick-ass ladies of SPN. Ellen has long been my favorite female character on the show with Jody right up there too. But there are none of these women I am glad to see gone, not even the bad-guys, they were just fantastic.

Thanks for this! (I think I recognize those initials, but whoever wrote this, well thought out ;) )

I adored Ellen and Jo too. They felt so much like family for the boys. Even Ash I saw as the goofy big brother.

Tina was a new comer to Supernatural. She was in About a Boy. I know for some it is not a likable episode but Tina was played by two actresses so well in that episode as was young Dean that I recommend it. Just for their performances. Also Dylan's and Jared's interaction and chemistry was top notch. Anyway, that is Tina. :)

And thank you for the compliment. I had thought about this topic a while and just decided to write about it. The idea came actually from just that fan vid you see at the end and from the Hell on Heels one. If I remember the name correctly.

PS. I guess it's no secret about those initials... :D

What a fun article Lilah. You did a great job. It always makes me a littlle sad to see how few of those kick-ass women are left. I hold my breath every time Jody is on! As I do for Charlie but I don't think she belongs on your list, yet. Gotta earn her "bad -ass" credentials. I miss Ellen the most and regret we didn't see more of Missouri she was a hoot. Thanks for this.:)

Glad you liked it!

I hold my breath on every man, woman, child or animal that makes a comeback to Supernatural. Let's face it that most get killed and when they bring a character back our fears are justified that they won't survive to the end. I miss Ellen a lot too and I can imagine what could have happened if Missouri had stayed on Supernatural. She was pretty awesome even if it was only one episode. :)

Not sure why Charlie was excluded. Doesn't make sense at all. She belongs in either the Family or Humanity sections.

Ah, but there are so many women in Supernatural. I like Charlie, but like her I also left out Eve, Hannah, Bela and even Rowena for example (Rowena has a pending status still what I think about her). It was a tough race but gladly those that couldn't make to the list are shown on the last video. Charlie is great and Felicia Day too. Thank you for reading and I hope that clarified which ones I chose. I tried to stick to four on each category. :)

Totally understand you picking your favs. I was just surprised Gwen and Karen were chosen over Charlie. Charlie has been in more episodes and continues to be in the show. She's definitely a part of Team Free Will now and the only kick-ass female 'family' member still alive lol. But each to their own.

Gwen Campbell and Karen Singer actually didn't go over Charlie in the choosing process. Variation was my target in all of the categories so I chose between Jo and Charlie as the brothers had similar relationship with both.

Gwen I chose because she is not that known than the others and she was a distant relative in relation for the boys. And also I would have wished that they would have left even one Campbell standing and Gwen would have been perfect.

Karen I chose because even a little piece of Bobby's life is always good to remember. She was important to him and also the boys learned something about Bobby's life and we learned the tragic tale of hers.

All four were by that very different but still they could be called as family.

I thought a lot about who, why and what reason I gathered each piece and although I couldn't include all I would have wanted I am glad they are mentioned in the comments because discussion about all the great women in Supernatural will be a tribute itself. :)

Great list... think I miss Ellen the most. Did you consider adding Lilith to your list? She always skeeved me out when she possessed children.

# Lilah_Kane 2015-03-03 01:02
Lilith was one too that I was thinking, but there was already three demons on the list so that was a hard call too. And children used as monsters is very creepy indeed!

I love the fact that one of these ladies was played (excellently) by a guy :-)

That is actually one of the reasons Meg was chosen and Jared did an excellent job portraying Meg. For some reason Meg felt the most dangerous that he played from those that teetered on the border of being good/bad. Even over Soulless!Sam. I guess what she was trying to do to the boys in that episode was the key.

And as a plus they finally got the anti possession tattoos to protect themselves because of Meg.
