I told myself I wasn't going to write anything about "Provenance," but after viewing the episode this morning, I had to. Sarah, my favorite gal for Sam, was in this ep, so spunky, pretty, fearless. He told her that his girlfriend and mother had died and that he feared he was the cause, yet she still wanted to be with him! Even Dean insisted, "Sam, marry that girl!" Before leaving, Sam gave her a great bunch of nice, slurpy kisses, and Dean watched and said, "That's my boy."
"Provenance" had one of the ugliest, nastiest little girl ghosts who stole her adopted father's razor, exited the painting, and killed people. She murdered while alive, before she was adopted, too, so she apparently had issues and should have been drowned in the nearest lake"”with her doll!
Dean saved both Sarah and Sam from the bitchy ghost girl just in time by burning the doll's hair. That left Sam directly on top of Sarah, and she would have probably been willing to let him do the deed right there, she wanted Sam so badly. Alas, he didn't give her the full-fledged lovin' she wanted, but a half-hearted vow to return to her - which hasn't happened yet, damn it. Here was a rich, pretty gal who knew their "profession," swept away Sam's angst, and genuinely liked him! When he looked uncomfortable on their date scanning the wine list, she ordered a beer, letting him off the hook. She had lost her mother and was coming back from her own grief, so they had a lot in common. Such a pity!
This is also the episode in which Dean urged Sam to get laid because it would make him less grouchy; we saw the Impala parked amongst fancy cars, including one with a plate that said, "the KRIP"; Dean talked with his mouth full to the snooty gallery owner, thinking him the waiter, and asked for champagne; Sam told someone about Jess and Mary (not how they died, just that they had died), and finally took a major step out of bereavement.
Dean had two pretty bar ladies all set up for him and Sam, but only Dean ended up spending the night with them. Sam, finding his brother sleeping it off in the passenger's seat of the Impala, rudely and loudly beeped the horn to wake Dean up. "Not cool," complained Dean. I laughed so hard! Even though he couched it rather crudely, Dean's concern for Sam's lack of contact with any lady since Jess was lovingly obvious, and their talk about it did convince Sam to make a date with Sarah, even if it was under the guise of getting the "providences," as Dean called them.
Once of my favorite episodes, "Provenance" had the great MOTW, brotherly interaction both serious and fun, a wonderful heroine who stood up to the stress, and a sweet love scene to end the show that even Dean approved of.

Robin, I wholeheartedly agree. Provenance is one of my favorite season 1 episodes, for all the reasons you stated:
1) a creepy MOTW;
2)Dean in a big brother mode. Love that. The "that's my boy" at the end was so sweet. Actually, he looked like a proud father;
3) SAM AND SARAH!!! They looked great together and she was awesome to him. I always wanted Sarah for Sam and I didn't give up yet. I keep hoping she will make an appearance some day. One can dream. :-)

I haven't rewatched Provenance in forever, but I think I might have to now. Robin, I definitely agree that Sarah was awesome. She and Sam would have been perfect together.

Aww, I love Provenance. It's such a great episode that encompasses everything that made me fall in love with Supernatural. Sarah with Sam - ideal pairing! Even Dean liked her. Children sociopaths always disturb me, as do dolls (especially ones made with pieces of the deceased!) but this episode is still one of my favourites of all time.

Easily one of season one's highlights for me for everything you pointed out. Creepy children can be overused, but here, where she was a brutal killer in life? Ace stuff. And Sarah, ah, Sarah, what a fantastic woman.

"I'd like some champagne, please."
"He's not a waiter."

Hi Robin
Another one on my list that I loved, I guess I’m at 18 out of 18 now.
Sara is whom I’d love Sam to be with, once he packs up the hunting life. Sam with Sara and Dean with Lisa. I think it’s a nice dream.
I do have to mention that the first time I saw Sam and Dean scaleling that Iron Gate of the Museum. Man if I was xx years younger. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

Robin, your review is right on! I love all about this episode, especially Sarah, that gutsy gorgeous gal who Sam should seriously think about giving a call.

Dean in the gallery scoffing food and annoying Sarah's dad was priceless!

The Impala was so cute stuck among all those snooty cars. :lol:

I too, loved this episode. It does have a great MOTW and the brother moments are touching and honest (for once). And yes, I agree with Andrea in that Dean does look like a proud father to Sam when he says "that's my boy".

Now, let's not all forget the great motel room the boys stay in. You just have to laugh when they walk in the room, scan the room and both go "huh". It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it.

Yes, the episode has everything and then some that Supernatural is best at. And Karen, I also love to watch the scene where the boys scale the Iron Gate. When watching on DVD I usually rewind a couple times and watch it over and over. Love to watch the boys do those kind of things. And then I laugh when thinking about the Gag reel and how Jared is unable to scale the gate in one of the clips. :-)
