"Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home." — Matsuo Basho

If the signs and omens from these two first episodes are true, then we will have a season full of great songs. Last episode we had the likes of Black Sabbath and in this episode we had "Lost Angel" by Heart. I did not try to find a video to that music, though, because I found two other great fan videos (although the name of the song fits Mary's story and the second video well).  I chose the main video because of the meaning of home. For Sam and Dean, Baby is home, but the home that they can return to and is their own is the MoL bunker.

The way back home in this episode goes through Sam's torture, mental and physical. The British Men of Letters have not gathered any points in my eyes although Ms. Watt seemed to be a good adversary killed too soon. The way home is without knowledge of the mysterious Mr. Ketch and the re-emergence of Lucifer in Vince Vincente's vessel. Rick Springfield is pretty good as the new vessel isn't he? After Toni is sent home, the Winchester family is able to do the same.

The bunker is the place where the trio ends up after all they have been through in recent times. Sam and Dean both are happy to show their mom their home. The dinner scene in the end, even though a little awkward, is warm and goofy. We also have an intimate look at Sam's and Mary's rooms as if we are flies on their wall, and at Dean's mindset while he is sitting on the kitchen floor. Even though there is no place like home, a home is a place where you have both good and bad times.

To Build A Home by The Cinematic Orchestra

There is a house built out of stone
Wooden floors, walls and window sills
Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust
This is a place where I don't feel alone
This is a place where I feel at home.

And I built a home
for you
for me

Until it disappeared
from me
from you

And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust........

Out in the garden where we planted the seeds
There is a tree as old as me
Branches were sewn by the color of green
Ground had arose and passed its knees

By the cracks of the skin I climbed to the top
I climbed the tree to see the world
When the gusts came around to blow me down
Held on as tightly as you held on me
Held on as tightly as you held on me......

And I built a home
for you
for me

Until it disappeared
from me
from you

And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust........

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British nu jazz and electronic music group, created in 1999 by Jason Swinscoe. The group is signed to independent record label Ninja Tune. In addition to Swinscoe, the band includes former DJ Food member PC (Patrick Carpenter) on turntables, Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (saxophone), Nick Ramm (piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Phil France (double bass). Former members include Jamie Coleman (trumpet), T. Daniel Howard (drums), Federico Ughi (drums), Alex James (piano), and Clean Sadness (synthesizer, programming). The most recent addition to the band is Mancunian guitarist Stuart McCallum. Swinscoe and Carpenter have also recorded together under the band name Neptune.

Mary Winchester | This is my story made by: swanZoe
Song: Watching The Storm by U137

Music:

Lost Angel by Heart

Quotes:

Mary: When we do find Sam. How am I gonna face him?
Dean: What do you mean?
Mary: That yellow-eyed thing would never have come for him that night if I... I started all of this.

Dean: You know when you died, it changed Dad. I mean he was hell-bent on finding out what happened. The hunter life, it just took him over. I guess I was the same. But, Sammy-- Sammy, he was different. He wanted out. He went to school, he went to Stanford.
Mary: Sam had a chance to get out, and he came back?
Dean: When Dad disappeared, Sam and I looked around and something became very clear. The only thing we had in this world -- the only thing, aside from this car -- was each other.

Sam: If you ever wanna talk. I know what it's like to come back and not feel like you really fit.
Mary: I just have so much about you boys to catch up on. Mother stuff. You know, first tooth, first crush.
Sam: Yeah.
Mary: I just have a lot of blanks to fill in.
Sam: Right, uh... Dad's journal. His writing, his words. Helped me fill in some blanks, answer some questions I didn't know I had. And you know, it-- it-- it keeps him with us. Sort of.
Mary: Thank you.
Sam: Goodnight
Mary: Dean said you got out of hunting.
Sam: Yeah.
Mary: And yet here you are.
Sam: Well, this is my family. My family hunts, you know? It's is what we do. Mom, for me... Just, um... having you here... fills in the biggest blank.

Minutiae:

In response to the June 12th 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting, Jerry Wanek placed lyrics from John Lennon's song "Imagine" in the set decoration of Vince Vincente's hotel. After the episode aired, Wanek tweeted "Thought we needed serenity after Orlando tragedy."

The photo Mary looks at in John's Journal is the same one of the hunters at Camp Chitaqua from 5.04 "The End". Its appearance here is curious given that Camp Chitaqua and the photo existed in a reality constructed by Zachariah. The photo does not exist in the "real world" unless Dean somehow brought it back with him.

The reason Dean and Mary are at the Bunker, rather than searching for Sam with Castiel, was explained in the previous episode when Dean tells Mary they need to go back to the Bunker to put a trace on Ms. Watt's cell phone.
