"A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others" L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Well, this weeks video was a pickle. I am glad that Nightsky did her weekly re-watch because CW is not showing reruns and who knows what episode we will get next. Until then I will follow WFB re-watch with my weekly fan video articles. So, in this episode we got Charlie back but not like she was before. Her time in OZ had been full of battle and she had been split to two, her good side and her bad side. During the run of Supernatural she hasn't been the only one that has done that.

You just need to look at Sam and Dean. Meg!Sam, Lucifer!Sam, Soulless!Sam and Gadreel!Sam could be called lawful evil but evil nonetheless. Description of lawful evil:

A lawful evil villain methodically takes what he wants within the limits of his code of conduct without regard for whom it hurts. He cares about tradition, loyalty, and order but not about freedom, dignity, or life. He plays by the rules but without mercy or compassion. He is comfortable in a hierarchy and would like to rule, but is willing to serve. He condemns others not according to their actions but according to race, religion, homeland, or social rank. He is loath to break laws or promises.

This reluctance comes partly from his nature and partly because he depends on order to protect himself from those who oppose him on moral grounds. Some lawful evil villains have particular taboos, such as not killing in cold blood (but having underlings do it) or not letting children come to harm (if it can be helped). They imagine that these compunctions put them above unprincipled villains.

Some lawful evil people and creatures commit themselves to evil with a zeal like that of a crusader committed to good. Beyond being willing to hurt others for their own ends, they take pleasure in spreading evil as an end unto itself. They may also see doing evil as part of a duty to an evil deity or master.

Lawful evil is sometimes called "diabolical," because devils are the epitome of lawful evil.

Lawful evil creatures consider their alignment to be the best because it combines honor with a dedicated self-interest.

Lawful evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents methodical, intentional, and frequently successful evil.

Now, with Dean he hasn't had that much comparison of his good and bad side. Shapeshifter!Dean and Demon!Dean comes close but like in Sam's case I don't see Dean's bad side lawful evil. The way his characters have been evil are more like chaotic evil/neutral evil.

A chaotic evil character does whatever his greed, hatred, and lust for destruction drive him to do. He is hot-tempered, vicious, arbitrarily violent, and unpredictable. If he is simply out for whatever he can get, he is ruthless and brutal. If he is committed to the spread of evil and chaos, he is even worse. Thankfully, his plans are haphazard, and any groups he joins or forms are poorly organized. Typically, chaotic evil people can be made to work together only by force, and their leader lasts only as long as he can thwart attempts to topple or assassinate him.

Chaotic evil is sometimes called "demonic" because demons are the epitome of chaotic evil.

Chaotic evil beings believe their alignment is the best because it combines self-interest and pure freedom.

Chaotic evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents the destruction not only of beauty and life but also of the order on which beauty and life depend.

A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, whether for profit, sport, or convenience. She has no love of order and holds no illusion that following laws, traditions, or codes would make her any better or more noble. On the other hand, she doesn't have the restless nature or love of conflict that a chaotic evil villain has.

Some neutral evil villains hold up evil as an ideal, committing evil for its own sake. Most often, such villains are devoted to evil deities or secret societies.

Neutral evil beings consider their alignment to be the best because they can advance themselves without regard for others.

Neutral evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents pure evil without honor and without variation.

When the brothers were copied by Leviathan!Brothers or the Alpha Shapeshifter they were total opposite from the two. Also they were merged to be Lawful Evil that had their rules. So, how do I see the possible evil sides for Sam and Dean? Total opposite of their character. Totally sinister and I would choose chaotic evil for them that work in unison. I mean if in season eleven The Darkness forms into mirror Sam and Dean that would be at the same time evil. That would be bloody scary. I mean to see Sam and Dean on the opposite side and still having the real Sam and Dean there. I would enjoy it. Although the scenes would be a pain in their asses. Jensen at least wouldn't like it, like we know.

TNPLH Charlie GB

But even though Charlie was split in two either side was not the real Charlie. The real!Charlie was missing. She was needed to be made whole and a balance from both sides make the real one. I guess the same can be said about Sam and Dean. One piece missing dips the scale to wrong way.

King And Lionhear by Of Monsters and Men

Taking over this town they should worry,
But these problems aside I think I taught you well.
That we won't run, and we won't run, and we won't run.
[Another version's additional line:] That we won't run, and we won't run, and we won't run.

And in the winter night sky ships are sailing,
Looking down on these bright blue city lights.
And they won't wait, and they won't wait, and they won't wait.
We're here to stay, we're here to stay, we're here to stay.

Howling ghosts – they reappear
In mountains that are stacked with fear
But you're a king and I'm a lionheart.
A lionheart.

His crown lit up the way as we moved slowly
Past the wondering eyes of the ones that were left behind.
Though far away, though far away, though far away
We're still the same, we're still the same, we're still the same.

Howling ghosts – they reappear
In mountains that are stacked with fear
But you're a king and I'm a lionheart.
And in the sea that's painted black,
Creatures lurk below the deck
But you're a king and I'm a lionheart.

And as the world comes to an end
I'll be here to hold your hand
'Cause you're my king and I'm your lionheart.
A lionheart. [8x]

Howling ghosts – they reappear
In mountains that are stacked with fear
But you're a king and I'm a lionheart.
And in the sea that's painted black,
Creatures lurk below the deck
But you're a king and I'm a lionheart.
A lionheart. [8x]

"You have plenty of courage, I am sure," answered Oz. "All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty." L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Charlie: We are going to fix this. I'm not letting what happened to me happen to you.
Dean: But it's already happened.
Sam: Cain found a way to live with it.
Dean: Right yeah, after centuries of murder.
Charlie: Yeah well, there's one thing you have that he didn't. You're a Winchester... I forgive you Dean.
Dean: Yeah well, I don't.
Charlie: I know, kinda your move. How's that working out for you?
Dean: I'm so sorry kiddo.
Charlie: Then prove it.

Sam: She's right, Dean. You can do this. We can do this.
Dean: Then let's get to work.

Lilah I loved this video, that's one of my favorite songs. I unapologeticall y love and miss the character of Charlie. She was one of Supernatural's richest characters in my opinion. The breakdown of the types of evil was very interesting. They resemble the different types of psychopaths and sociopaths I have read about. Some are very contained and organized, able to function almost normally. Others are disorganized and impulsive. Some do evil for the sheer enjoyment and high of it. Others have agendas and "rules". Good article.

Thanks Leah!

Glad you liked it. The idea for comparing the evil sides actually came while I was writing the article. The video was mostly about Dean's and Charlie's relationship but connecting it to the episode sprung this idea in my mind.

Lilah, I enjoyed your analysis of the different categories of evil. I particularly liked the accompanying pictures. I don't know what it says about me, but I find Evil Sam and Evil Dean to be "all manner of hot" as Meg would say (at least I think that's how she described bad Cas). :D
# Lilah_Kane 2015-08-13 11:12
Well, I have a weakness. I also think that bad guys are hot (it does depend on the bad guy though). So, which bad guy was your favorite? Because I do have hard time to pick only one. I mean Leviathan!Broth ers and Alpha shapeshifter!Br others were just because those two episodes are the only episodes where both brothers have been duplicated in same place. I mean that is quartet hotness right there with the good and bad side. But if I really, really needed to choose. It is a tie with, dun dun duuuuun, Demon!Dean and Gadreel!Sam (Meg!Sam comes close) ;)

OK Lilah, if FORCED to choose I would pick Demon Dean- specifically when he was stalking Sam through the bunker, and a Meg/Sam- Soulless Sam tie. yeah, I know that I'm cheating with that tie! :D

I agree on your choices. They are very good indeed! :D

Soulless Sam... he was smoking hot. There was something irresistible about how calculating he was. He seemed capable of anything and that was just about the hottest thing ever. :D:D

Means to an end kinda guy. ;)

I agree E. And he didn't take crap from anyone! I love regular Sam, but sometimes I want to yell at him "stick up for yourself! don't take that!" He can be TOO nice sometimes. Actually I guess I should be yelling that at the writers and not at the fictional character.:D

Hi Samandean. As nice as it was to have this incarnation of Sam (SS) for awhile it just wouldn't be Sam if he were like that all the time. I think Sam is very capable of and has stood up for himself quite admirably through the years. Sam doesn't overreact to things, especially his brother who he had had a lifetime with and understands better than Dean understands himself. As much as I love all the different Sam's that Jared has played so incredibly well, I love 'regular' Sam the best. I love all the layers to these characters so much. I love their insecurities, flaws, pain, and their heart. A little less pain would be nice. I DO hope this season has them on the same page (mostly anyway, they will always butt heads), working toward a common goal.

Hi Leah. I love regular Sam best as well, as appealing as SS was in some ways.:) I was glad that arc didn't last any longer than it did because I really missed having the brothers truly back together again. The past few years, however, there have been some stretches where Sam has been written so passively that it seemed OOC and I found it frustrating. You're right about the many layers in both Sam and Dean's characters. It's why they're so endlessly fascinating!
# LEAH 2015-08-14 19:24
Oh for sure Sam was written a little TOO passive and in the background at times in recent years. I had also thought Dean was written a little too aggressive and more dickish than usual a few times. Not counting the demon and MoC Dean. They are perhaps some the of most interesting and multi layered characters in my memory. My cable is pretty limited so maybe there are more out there. As you know well, I am currently somewhat obsessed with Walking Dead. There are some pretty complicated and constantly evolving characters in that show. The ones they don't kill.

Sounds a lot like Supernatural in character progression which is NOT a good thing! :D
