We've never had a good, central place to report site issues, and we know they're happening. Those little Gremlins love causing mischief! Please report your issue or problem by replying to this post. Our crack site administrator will get right on it.
We are having issues lately where user accounts are being disabled at random. I'm working on the problem. If you find you can't login, send me a message via "Contact Us" or post a reply here. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Hi Alice - was checking out the different features on the site. On the Polls page, I noticed that the text on the poll questions is black; this is illegible with the dark gray background. I know you can just highlight the text and read it; just wanted to give you a heads up.
Thanks for pointing that out! I was doing some customizing on other pages and it must have affected that one! I've fixed it. Sorry about that.
On the Discussion Page it seems to be full of Sexual Medical stuff or it seems likek it. Not discussions of our show, for sure.
I swear, I turned on all the security functions yesterday. Captcha on posts, all posts must be moderated before posting, etc. Obviously something isn't working. I'll get on it! Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
I've just noticed that the lets discuss page here seems to be allowing anonymous posts. Personally, I enjoy knowing who I'm talking to, whether they've chosen to log in or not. It might become difficult, later, for readers to tell whether comments are coming from multiple anonymous people, or one poster.
I don't know if this is something that bothers others, but I would rather see it made a requirement for posters to "own" their comments with a name.
Thanks st50. It's not supposed to be allowing anonymous posts, nor is it supposed to be allowing spam either. I have all those settings turned on, and they seem to be not working. I'll have to open up a tech support ticket with the software provider. Who knows, I might up end tossing this program and going back to the drawing board! But I agree, it shouldn't be happening.
Hi. This isnt a question about a technical problem but I was wondering if the rules of posting ie 'Be nice, be constructive, show respect' etc apply to all areas of the site.
Hi Ettie! The answer is our rules apply to the comments section on articles and this discussion page. That's usually where all the user interaction is! We do have a CBOX, but that is a free form chat room that is not moderated. That is a third party application that we subscribe to.
Let me know if that answers your question or not. Thanks!
Hi Alice. I have been wondering how other people are getting nested comments (on the discussion page) and I am not able to do it. Leah and I just realised that there is only access to nested comments in Chrome but as far as I can see not in Firefox or IE. In Firefox there is a "(heart) like" button in the place where the "comment" button is in Chrome.
Also in chrome the timing of previous comments is pretty random, where it seems to be correct in Firefox. Honestly I don't think it is really a major problem, just thought I would let you know.
and I can comment without logging in or passing any security tests?
If you're a registered user, you should be able to comment without the security tests. Anyone, logged in or not, should be able to comment. I did fix the security box (aka captcha) a few days ago. I haven't tried this application in Chrome, so I'll give it a try. I use Firefox and Safari and have no issues.
There have been some fishy topics arising that I think are not fit to be there. They sound like adult adds.
Anyway, wanted to poke you about these:

And one sounds like it is a hoax to get money from people.
Those posts are back again. I think you might need to block them so they can't post anymore. Don't know how that works, but giving heads up again.
It's the same posters:

Blocking isn't so easy. It's kind of like fighting off bugs with a bug zapper. I can block but they will come back with different ips. I'm going to try to limit threads being created by only registered users. I thought I already had, but maybe that's not working.
Alice, the past two days I have frequently been getting bounced off the site and the screen comes up saying that it's a server issue. It happens most often when I'm trying to load comments from an article with many comments. Is this happening to anyone else?
Samandean10, oh yes, it's happening to everyone else, including me. The problem is our commenting system. We have a thread with over 300 comments on it right now, and some of those comments got corrupted. I've fixed them, but everything is still too wonky. It's impossible to load all the comments for that thread. The system tries, then ends up throwing a server error, which I know to mean it's running out of memory. When many people try to access those article comments at once, it cripples the server.
The thing is, our comments are the lifeblood of the site. It's where all the open discussion and interaction happens. I'm going to need a solution that can handle high volume. I'm considering going to a third party provider like Disqus. That way, comments aren't hosted on our server. The risk is, I lose control of the comments and history, but we just don't make enough money to have a more powerful server. 75% of the websites are on disqus, we probably should be too.
Sorry for the long explanation, but these are the pains of being a larger volume site on a small site budget!
I'm not sure if this is where I should post this but I saw somewhere that there was a CBOX chat room where I could talk to other fans but couldn't find it? I was wondering if this still exists? I wanted to interview some fans (as well as WFB writers) for a project I am doing on the Supernatural fandom. Thank you,
We used to have a CBOX, but we were paying a monthly service fee for it and people stopped using it. I guess one too many fan fights broke out and the regulars got fed up and left. When the box came up for renewal, I didn't renew and took it down. If enough people show interest, I can revive the CBOX, but for now you're the first person to ask about it since I took it down, so I don't think many are missing it.
I am a new participant in the discussions and i want to thank you for this site. I'm not sure this is the appropriate place to do it, but since this page focuses on the website, I picked it. I enjoy reading the articles and the discussion they cause.
It would be nice to have an opportunity to preview my comments before they are posted. I don't know how big a deal this is technically, but since the comment field has a small visual field while one is typing into it, it is easy to make a mistake.
Once again, thanks for a great site.
Thanks for the suggestion! We are looking at many options for the commenting system, and I'll certainly keep that on the list. If you are a registered user and logged in, you can edit your comments after they are posted. So that's an option too.

You can actually resize the comment field. At the bottom of it, there is a little collection of dots. Put your cursor over it, click and hold, and move it up or down.
Is there any chance of adding a "spoiler" option to replies?
That way if one of us wants to comment on info about a future episode, without ruining it for those who don't want to know, then we can wrap them in spoiler tags.
Yes. It requires some coding on my part. It's always been on my wish list, as well as adding more emoticons. Usually these little site projects are knocked off during Hellatus, so I'll make sure it gets addressed.
I just fixed it Russ. I had to actually go into the database and change the raw data to fix it. No matter what I did through the application, it wouldn't flip the thread from private. Really weird. I need to report that to the software maker.
Oh, I meant when I finally signed up to the site there is a tab where you can find all the new discussions in the notifications of the discussion board. Of course there were hundreds because I just joined. I clicked through them all but I was wondering if there was easier way to "Mark them all read" so they wouldn't be seen as new.
Hi Alice on my tablet if I try to open the drop-down menu for 'articles' it sends me to a new tab and THEN going back to the original tab shows that the drop down menu has appeared. The ddm doesn't appear on the new tab ....
This doesn't happen with any of the other headers - tapping on them gives a menu first.
I am using an Android Nexus tablet if that helps
Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look. I can try it on my daughter's Android phone. All of our other devices are Apple!
Hi Alice. So the problem never got resolved and (up to yesterday) the dropdown for the Discussion page does nothing at all. Everything is formatted differently than for the phone - that works fine - and looks like a desktop format while working differently
Since you just went onto Disqus things may change again.
Hi Alice, this isn't exactly a technical question.
Can I ask what the site policy is on people (including writers) having multiple user names?
I get that a site writer might like to be able to separate their 'writing hat' from their 'personal opinion hat' - and I know at least one of them has done that at least once - but I am wondering if we are all on a level playing field here? I know you aren't going to have much problem with people signing up and using other names and most people if they change their names tend to let everyone know. It is principally regular commenters and site writers I was wondering about.
I'm not saying you SHOULD have a policy, just wondering if you have any opinion on it?
Hi Alice, there was something happening that caused me to ask, but it was mostly just because it got me thinking about it.
Honestly, anyone can pick their own user names. I don't have a policy on it. I know that in going to DISQUS, some people had their user names changed because they already had a DISQUS account with a different name. But I'm thinking that's not what you're eluding to. Can you send me an email with specifics and perhaps I can elaborate further?
Hi Alice, the personal message function on the discussion page doesn't seem to be working. I can't receive any messages (I had 2 messages come though that i could read and then nothing) - it appears mine are going the other way.
eilf - We have several functions not working quite right, including some of my backend stuff. I got the new version of Easy Discuss and installed yesterday. It should start working now. I know Nate will be looking at this feature. Let me know on this page if you have further issues on it.
eilf, you might be having the problem I had when I first got a few PMs last year. After you have received a few from the same person, the new ones don't appear until you click on the "view all messages" message at the top. It's invisible until you scroll over it. At least that's what happened to me.
I am lying about the last bit - it lights up red when the cursor goes over it. :D
Oh lookee that!!!! There's cream text on a cream background that when you click on it puts up another message in cream saying 'do not click this text again!' (to paraphrase the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, badly)
Some links and pictures have been broken from update. At least gifs are not working.
It all depends how big the .gif is. Our setting was set to only 2 MB. I upped that value but gifs should be working.
Oh yes, links are another story. This new version upgraded the way comments and replies are tracked (notice the convert to reply feature?) While this is a vast improvement for an administrator moderating posts, it did change all the links. Let me know which of your posts are link intensive and I'll see if I can't update them in a mass update. The page is setup now that if a link is bad, it takes you to the main Discussion Page.
Thanks for your report! Yes, I'll concede, the writers links were broken a few months back when the software I was using was delisted from the Joomla forum and removed. I have yet to find it's replacement! Also, I'm so with you on the refresh rate. We are running on an outdated template and framework and I've been working on a site redesign meant to bolster performance and modernize us a bit. We are using some very clunky technology right now. We are a few months away from that happening but I wanted to let you know it's in the works!
To continue the post I made in the episode 17 about site hacking:
I am always using firefox, never internet explorer. I am accessing this site directly through google. I am also viewing the site from Finland, so I don't know if that's what causing this site to show as hacked so often? Most days during the week this site is unaccessible and is trying to claim I won some internet lottery and tries to push a virus to my computer.
Thanks so much for the info! If you access the site directly, you won't get any spam links. But I did find some links through Google Search yesterday that have been hijacked and are redirecting our traffic. I am in the process of rebuilding our site map and will resubmit to Google. I'll also work with them to try and catch any bad links. Unfortunately, this is something that goes beyond our usual site virus scans. Those usually just find hacks that are on the regular site, not what's out in the SEO world. Unless Google alerts me (which they haven't), these problems are very hard to catch. My best recommendation at this point is to access the site directly until I can get this worked out with them.
Please let me know if you have any other problems, especially if accessing the site directly. Your info has helped me identify the source of the problem so I really appreciate it!
I am aware that we have a number of links that are broken on the site. There is no easy way to find these other than trial and error. So, please, if you read an old article that has a bad link or missing photo, please report it below. I know the Episode Guides are having issues right now. If I get enough, I might create a separate thread and make all entries eligible for a drawing or something. Cleaning up the archives is always my Summer Hellatus priority.
Hi Alice. I am having trouble with embedding stuff in posts. If it is early enough in the comment it messes up the 'Latest Comments' page and all the other comments disappear. I posted a follow-on comment and that didn't appear either though I don't know if that is due to the delay that sometimes occurs between posting and it appearing on the comments page (it can be around a 1/2 hour sometimes and then other times it appears instantly).
I am going to undo it because people will be mad but here is a picture of the result - I embedded a tweet.
(obviously it wasn't a tweet of that ad, that is on the Latest Comments page)
I'll have to check it out, but I'm very sure the Latest Comments can't show embedded stuff. Having said that though, it should be able to just show the embedded code. That feed comes directly from DISQUS so I'll have to see what it is sending. Thanks for the report.
