Season 8 is exactly 12 days away, joy!  In order to help count down the days, we're reviewing all of Jeremy Carver's episodes to see if it gives us a hint of what may be in store for us in season 8.  His first episode was season 3's "Sin City," so let's take a look, bullet-point style!

  • You just know something bad's gonna happen when the show opens with a nun in a church.  Something bad and probably blasphemous!
  •     I really like how the burst of air that startles the nun only blows out half the candles in this candle holder.  That is a really great touch.  Also, I love the shot visually.

  •     How cool is the "Bobby takes apart the Colt while Dean smelts bullets" scene?  Really super cool.  I miss these little glimpses into their daily hunter routines.  Also, it's really amusing that Dean is making bullets over an open flame right on Bobby's desk.  Seems safe.
  •     Bobby, your face!

  •     It's very interesting to watch this episode knowing that the priest is a demon.  He really pulls off the caring father thing pretty well.  And does a good job leading Sam and Dean down the wrong track.
  •     I love Dean's little giggle when they get to the hotel room and it has a mirror on the ceiling.

  •     I really like the idea of Richie, the idea that Dean made other hunter friends on occasion.  But the actual Richie was pretty ridiculous.  It was like "Jersey Shore: Hunters Edition."
  •     I love, love, love the use of "Run Through the Jungle" in this episode. LOVE IT!
  •     Walking through Trotter's bar is the perfect opportunity for some Sam bitchface. There we go.

  •     Dean drinking a hurricane.  Ha!
  •     The whole scene with Bobby and Ruby during target practice is excellent.  We don't see a ton of scenes between characters when Sam and Dean aren't around, but I generally enjoy them.  It's great to see what they're getting up to while the boys aren't around.
  •     Ha ha, Bobby shot Ruby.
  •     Sam's 0/3 with the whole holy water demon test in this episode.
  •     I kind of have a hard time with the fact that Dean didn't memorize the exorcism before this episode.  I mean, they've been around demons since season 1, and an exorcism is one of their best weapons against demons, so wouldn't it make sense to know it by heart?  At least he memorizes it after this, but still.
  •     Squeaky pig slippers!

  •     Every time there's pale yellow powder on a surface somewhere, it's sulfur.  And yet, the boys are always amazed by that fact.  Just once, I want there to be yellow powder somewhere, and when they sniff it, it turns out to be curry powder.  "Curry!"
  •     I did enjoy the banter between Dean and Casey the demon.  It was interesting, had some nice foreshadowing, and I thought the actress who played Casey was great.  She really sold it.  It's not easy to stand in one place and deliver dialogue for 10 minutes of show.  Also, the part where Dean asks what Hell is like just breaks my heart.

  •     That awkward moment when the demon priest remembers your story better than you do.
  •     The demon priest subtly trying to recruit Sam is all kinds of awesome.
  •     Ohh, I'd forgotten this was the episode where we learn Azazel's name.
  •     I kind of don't get why demon priest didn't just dispatch Sam when he had the chance, though.  Plenty of opportunity, he knew where Casey was.  Doesn't add up for me.
  •     This is a really neat building, all covered in ivy.  And that's a perfect Impala parking spot right there!

  •     Wow, it's been a while since I've seen this episode, and I totally forgot Bobby shows up at the end with the Colt and with Ruby.
  •     I'm a little sad that Casey dies, though.  I liked her, even though she was a demon.
  •     Here's a game that's easy to play!  It's "Supernatural What If"!  What if Sam had just shot Ruby when he had the chance?  Man, "Supernatural" What If" may be easy to play, but it sure is depressing.

And there you have it.  "Sin City" was a good, solid episode.  It was a good first effort by Carver, but it's not going to make any Top 10 lists like some of his other episodes.  Up next, "A Very Supernatural Christmas"!!!  That is a seriously good episode.  Alice is handling that review, so check back tomorrow to see what she has to say about it!
