Elle, in Heaven and Hell I was thinking that it was Anna who disposed of Alistair by taking back her grace. But you're right that Dean and his tyre iron stopped Alistair from exorcising Castiel. How about a score draw: one to Dean for the save, one to Anna for blowing the final whistle?

Interesting stuff ... I didn't like Anna and her big googly eyes/ wanting to feel lurve schtick too much to start with but now she's gone all rebellious and started stabbing people in the head I'm warming to her no end ( I could really do with a celestial hairdresser, too! ) Narcissus, I don't think people have stopped believing in God ( which would be a bit daft considering they're all armpit deep in Angels and whatnot ... ) They've just stopped expecting any help from that direction. One thing puzzles me though, if all the demons bobbed up topside with Lucifer then who's minding the store down in Hell? They'll all get chased back downstairs by The Righteous Brothers ( hi Rich! ) and their mates only to find that the damned have siezed their chance and scarpered and they'll have to start again from scratch with some industrial strength mass-temptation ... ( there you go Eric, season 6 ... )

"If Chuck sees something, but doesn't write it, is it still pre-destined?" I think it is. Castiel did say Chuck was just a mouthpiece. Whether or not a prophet chooses to transmit what he receives has no effect on what is meant to be. I'm with the rest of you on Anna...her story is somewhat awkward, but I like her nonetheless. Generally,I absolutely love how the mythology is developing. But, I'm really sad to see a loss of faith among so many characters. Considering the role of God has been such a persistent question this season, I would have liked to see some people still believing in God instead of everyone losing belief. I wonder where Sam stands now - considering he was all gung-ho about having faith in the past, he's been silent on the issue this season. But I do believe that, even if Sam still had faith, all the demon blood will somehow distance him from God. I so can't wait to see what season 5 is going to bring to the plate.

Great article! Faellie, your analysis of the characters and the speculation of what's to come is spot on! Like you, I enjoy Anna's character quite a lot - she brings an interesting element of uncertainty because she's on her own side and she's kind of bad ass. Regarding Anna and the "feelings" - at one point she mentions to Dean how hard it was being stationed on earth and I wonder if, like Cas the more he was around Dean, Anna began to develop doubt and certain other feelings. I thought there were a few scenes that had an undercurrent of feelings between Cas and Anna - in Heaven and Hell when Castiel watches with an odd expression as Anna kisses Dean, for example. I wonder if that wasn't part of the reason she fell. It is interesting, the point about Anna falling at almost exactly the same time that Sam was "infected" by YED - I didn't even realize that. I can't imagine it's coincidence though. I always enjoy reading analysis by others because inevitably something is caught that I missed. Great summary of where all the players are at as we enter into Season 5, too - Great read, Faellie! (Umm, wasn't it Dean who saved Cas, not Anna, in Heaven and Hell?:| Did you mean when Anna saved Castiel in OTHOAP from Uriel?)

Thanks for the comments. The more I think about the angels, the more trying to decipher what's going with them turns into Kremlinology, or a John Le Carre novel. I particularly agree with you both that Anna's storyline is troubling. For instance, she "fell" almost exactly two years after Azazel dropped blood in Sam's mouth. Coincidence? Or time for a little angelic plotting, and finding a suitable host mamma? I'm one of those who rather likes Anna. But my biggest fear for Season 5 is that Anna will be to Dean what Ruby was to Sam. We know the writers love symmetry - and after all, Supernatural is a horror series.

castiel, at that point, probably did not know the full extent of heaven's plans; that lilith was the final seal and that sam had to be the one to kill her. zachariah made a comment in 4.22 about the whole so-called war against the demons and trying to save seals as something done for the benefit of the 'grunts on the ground'. cas is a grunt, and i suppose they needed him to believe that they were sincerely trying to stop the rise of lucifer. also, by making it clear to sam and, more importantly, dean, that the angels loathed the use of these powers, they effectively drove sam to develop them in secret. this meant that dean had no say in what sam did to develop them; whether he was getting better through harmless (a presumption) practise or by chugging blood by the gallon. imagine how different things would have been if dean had a hand in sam's training? i agree that the anna storyline was badly developed. i think she was written as a two-episode character and when the fans thought she was cool, the writers were so overjoyed that they wrote her into the story. i think what anna might have meant by the emotion thing was that she wanted to act on these emotions. cas couldn't deviate from his orders, as much as he wanted to help dean. and i don't think angels are allowed to have one-night stands ala dean and anna, so maybe that was what she was talking about; acting on her desires like humans would. maybe. all this is speculation.

Awesome article. While I think the addition of angels to the show has been overwhelmingly successful, there are a few issues that I can't quite figure out. First of all, why were Castiel and Uriel so against Sam using his powers in the first half of the season? It was well established that Castiel did nothing without orders from his superiors. Those superiors needed Sam to be strong enough to kill Lilith, so...? My other issue is the idea that Anna fell because she wanted to feel emotion. With the exception of Castiel very early in the season, none of the other angels we met had any trouble expressing emotions. Heck, even Anna's desire to be human is, in and of itself, an emotion. Actually, I think Anna's whole storyline doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.
