"All the seven deadly sins are man's true nature. To be greedy. To be hateful. To have lust. Of course, you have to control them, but if you're made to feel guilty for being human, then you're going to be trapped in a never-ending sin-and-repent cycle that you can't escape from.” ― Marilyn Manson

Here he comes. Last of the Princes of Hell. Asmodeus' character in Supernatural actually follows his real life mythology counterpart fairly well, as you will see later. That is why it was pretty easy to get an idea for this article, yet still it is little bit complex. Because he is the demon of lust, I chose that word as the theme for this article. It also connects the story to the seven deadly sins that are related to the same word as well. I collected a lot information about all three princes from real mythology and how they connect to the sins. I also found two videos that fit and they are pretty great. There is one extra video about Jack at the end of the article. It was too good to pass  up!

Enjoy!

S12 Ramiel 1

Ramiel

Râmîêl is both a fallen Watcher and an angel in the apocryphal Book of Enoch. Ramiel means "thunder of God" from the Hebrew elements ra'am and El, "God".

As a Fallen Watcher:   There are 20 leaders in the Book of Enoch, also called 1 Enoch. The section that mentions them reads: “7. And these are the names of their leaders: Sêmîazâz, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêêl, Kôkabîêl, Tâmîêl, Râmîêl, Dânêl, Êzêqêêl, Barâqîjâl, Asâêl, Armârôs, Batârêl, Anânêl, Zaqîêl, Samsâpêêl, Satarêl, Tûrêl, Jômjâêl, Sariêl. 8. These are their chiefs of tens." - R. H. Charles translation, The Book of the Watchers, Chapter VI.”  As described in 1 Enoch, these are the leaders of 200 angels that are turned into fallen Angels due to their taking wives, mating with human women, and teaching forbidden knowledge. One of 20 leaders, Ramiel is mentioned sixth.

As an Angel:   In this same work, Ramiel is also the name of an angel, and is described as "one of the holy angels whom God has set over those who rise" from the dead, in effect the angel that watches over those that are to resurrect. He is mentioned also in 2 Baruch where he presides over true visions (55:3).  Ramiel is the angel of hope, and he is credited with two tasks: he is responsible for divine visions, and he guides the souls of the faithful into Heaven. He is called Jeremiel or Uriel in various translations of IV Esdras. He is said to have been the archangel responsible for the destruction of the armies of Sennacherib, as well as being the bearer of the instructions of the seven archangels.

S12 Dagon 1

Dagon

Dagon or Dagan is an ancient Mesopotamian Assyro-Babylonian and Levantine (Canaanite) deity. He appears to have been worshipped as a fertility god in Ebla, Assyria, Ugarit and among the Amorites. The Hebrew Bible mentions him as the national god of the Philistines with temples at Ashdod and elsewhere in Gaza.

A long-standing association with the word for "fish" dâg, perhaps going back to the Iron Age, has led to an interpretation as a "fish-god", and the association of "merman" motifs in Assyrian art (such as the "Dagon" relief found by Austen Henry Layard in the 1840s). The god's name was, however, more likely derived from a word for "grain", suggesting that he was in origin associated with fertility and agriculture.

S12 Asmodeus 1

Asmodeus

Asmodeus is a king of demons mostly known from the deuterocanonical Book of Tobit, in which he is the primary antagonist. The demon is also mentioned in some Talmudic legends; for instance, in the story of the construction of the Temple of Solomon. He was supposed by some Renaissance Christians to be the King of the Nine Hells. Asmodeus also is referred to as one of the seven princes of Hell. In Binsfeld's classification of demons, each one of these princes represents one of the seven deadly sins (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride). Asmodeus is the demon of lust and is therefore responsible for twisting people's sexual desires, as seen in the book of Tobias especially. He is also said to be here on Earth after millions of years in hell. In Jewish and Islamic lore he is the king of the demons (Shedim/Jinn). It is said in Asmodeus; Or, The Devil on Two Sticks, that people who fall to Asmodeus' ways will be sentenced to an eternity in the second level of hell.

Supernatural - All Your Sins (Pentagram Song) by: Lord DarkTower

I'm Alive by Disturbed

Never again will I be dishonored
And never again will I be reminded
Of living within the world of the jaded
They kill inspiration
It's my obligation
To never again, allow this to happen
Where do I begin?
The choices are endless
Denying the sin
My art, my redemption
I carry the torch of my fathers before me

The thing I treasure most in life cannot be taken away
There will never be a reason why I will surrender to your advice
To change myself, I'd rather die
Though they will not understand
I will make the greatest sacrifice
You can't predict where the outcome lies
You'll never take me alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive

Change again, cannot be considered
I rage again, dispelling my anger
Where do I begin?
The choices are endless
My art, my redemption, my only salvation
I carry the gift that I have been blessed with
My soul is adrift in oceans of madness
Repairing the rift that you have created
I am not alone, brothers, give me your arms now

The thing I treasure most in life cannot be taken away
There will never be a reason why I will surrender to your advice
To change myself, I'd rather die
Though they will not understand
I will make the greatest sacrifice
You can't predict where the outcome lies
You'll never take me alive

I'm no slave
Are you feeling brave?
Or have you gone out of your mind?
No more games
It won't feel the same
If I hold my anger inside
There's no meaning
My soul is bleeding
I've had enough of your kind
One suggestion, use your discretion
Before you label me blind

The thing I treasure most in life cannot be taken away
There will never be a reason why I will surrender to your advice
To change myself, I'd rather die
Though they will not understand
I will make the greatest sacrifice
You can't predict where the outcome lies
You'll never take me alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive

Quotes

Asmodeus: I am Asmodeus...
Drexel: Fourth Prince of Hell.
Asmodeus: ...here to rule until such time as Lucifer returns with his son. And there are gonna be some changes. The underperforming and ineffective, the corporate lackeys of the Crowley era are being purged. The grand old days of fire and brimstone are back. The following will step forward: Mr. Drexel. Mr. Harrington. Mr. Sierra. As for the rest of y'all... There's a new sheriff in town.

Sam: I'll tell you what. You got some special skills, Jack. That's for sure. We just need to make sure to get a grip on them, so... so you don't hurt anybody.
Jack: Is that why Dean hates me?
Sam: Dean doesn't hate you. It.. Look, sometimes the wires in Dean's head get crossed and -- and he gets frustrated, and then he mixes frustration with anger and -- and fear.
Jack: Why would he be afraid?
Sam: Because Dean feels like it's his job to protect everyone. And right now, we need to protect you. But we also may need to protect people from you.
Jack: Maybe I'm not worth all this.
Sam: Your mom thought you were. So did Cas. So do I.

Michael: You are Lucifer. I can feel it. But how is that even possible?
Lucifer: Um... You know, alternate universes, interdimensional travel, blah, blah, blah. It's her fault. Uh, I'll buy that you're Michael, but you sort of seem like a cheap knockoff to the one I left behind, and he's a hot mess.
Michael: I killed my Lucifer. Tore him apart in the skies over Abilene. But hey, can't get enough of a good thing.

Trivia and Minutiae

The demon Asmodeus is considered a king of the shedim in Jewish folklore, and listed as a Prince of Hell in Binsfeld's Classification of Demons, where he is the demon of lust.

The episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! that Jack was watching was "That Snow Ghost". This season in episode 16, Supernatural will do an episode featuring Scooby-Doo.

Jack first opens the Bible to the Song of Solomon. This book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament is a celebration of sex. This may be a reference to Asmodeus who is considered the demon of lust.

Asmodeus telling Dean how his "mother" would never stick up for him can possibly be seen as an allusion to Lilith, who was the first demon created by Lucifer.
