The nominations were collected, the votes have been cast, the results have been tabulated, and the winners are now official!  I’m proud to announce the winners, runner-ups, editor's choice and maybe a few honorable mentions just for kicks for the 17 categories of The Winchester Family Business Supernatural Season 12 Fan Vote Awards.

This one wasn’t as close as I thought it would be.  In the end, the fan favorite episode 12.22 overcame all other episodes easily, even though “Regarding Dean” was a contender early in the voting.  For me, I was with the masses.  It was kind of a no-brainer.  You’ll find that “Who We Are” has taken many prizes in this year’s awards.

“There’s Something About Mary”

You know, “The One We Were Waiting For” was pretty terrible, taking a beloved idea created by the legendary SPN writer Ben Edlund and just completely trashing it with a weak version of “The Producers.”  Honestly though, it didn’t make me as spitting mad and furious as “There’s Something About Mary.”  I mean seriously, I was ready to quit the show after that one until Bobo Berens gave us the absolutely perfect “Who We Are.”  Any episode that results in a very vocal #firebuckleming outrage on Twitter (with me joining in even though I usually hate those kind of campaigns) that actually trends higher than “Supernatural” itself deserves some sort of prize.  May it never happen again.

Newbie writer Meredith Glynn redeems herself with this award after winning the Worst Episode award.  Two in a row for her! The winner and runner-up were really the only ones in the contest.  The others barely registered, although Dean trying to read his lips in “Regarding Dean” managed to scrape up a few votes.  Yeah, I know, the winner was more of a running gag than an actual scene, but it was fantastic.  For me, the payoff with the whole Post it Note gag was huge.  You had to wait for it, but “Witch Killing Bullets” was the ultimate zinger too priceless for words.  Honorable mention to the warning not to go for the grenade launcher.

Dean’s speech to Mary - “Who We Are”

I actually wept over the closing group hug in “Who We Are” as it seems many of our voters did, but honestly I was an emotional wreck before that moment happened, mostly due to Dean’s heartfelt and stunning speech to Mary while trying to get through to her.  It was all so revealing not just for Dean, but Mary as well.  She was happiest and safest when at home with her four year old and newborn son.  That’s the place where she has been stuck all season long.  As for Dean, the reveal that he has always been angry at Mary because of what her deal did to Sam, not him, sums up every action of his in the entire series.  To reconcile this moment and decide to move forward was a huge step for both of them.  Bravo Mr. Berens for managing to tie up such an important thread in one beautiful and long overdue scene.

As for our runner-up, that was number one in my book until “Who We Are” aired.  Some absolutely great stuff for Jensen this season.

The “blaze of glory” discussion - “Who We Are”

It seems this time I’m going against the grain.  I absolutely loved the whole scene of Sam and Dean, exhausted and near defeat while trapped in the bunker, discussing how they thought it would all end.  In a blaze of glory.  There was just something about the brutal honesty of that discussion that got me teary, one of three times in what is clearly my favorite episode of the season.  Dean’s speech and the brotherly hug at Jody’s was awesome, but there were bigger moments in that episode for me.  As I said

But “The Memory Remains” was pretty damn good and offered one of the rare sentimental moments this season had to offer.  By the time that had aired we were dying of thirst for a brotherly moment and it delivered something very quenching.  A well deserved accolade from the fans.

The raid on the British Men of Letters compound and Jody killing Umbridge, I mean, Dr. Hess - “Who We Are”

Yes, this was a three way battle for second place.  Only the scene of Mary beating up Mr. Ketch didn’t register much with voters.  I picked the death of Umbridge, I mean Dr. Hess, because I thought she was the most ill-conceived and heinously annoying character since the ridiculous Styne family (not to mention a terrible scene chewer).  My Chuck, I NEVER thought it could get worst than that.  Once again, Brad and Eugenie proved me wrong.  She was not “love to hate” as much as she was “WTF were they thinking???”  Her death was soooo freaking satisfying that I watched it again, and again, and again, and then one more time.  So yes, Sam and Dean taking on the special forces was awesome, but to me was so damned predictable and I was already picking through the plot holes of “First Blood” by the time that part got to air.  But I was in the minority.

For the record, Dean finally using the grenade launcher would have been an awesome option too but “Who Are We” already had two scenes in this category and I really needed that for another one.  It just goes to show, we needed more action and badass moments through the entire season, not just in one episode.

Rick Springfield (Vince Vincente, Lucifer)

This is a tricky category.  One year I broke it out for recurring vs. one time guests but even that was not possible this year.  Most of the nominees appeared more than once.  Then you have Jim Beaver who has been in numerous episodes since season one and Samantha Smith also falls in this category.  Yet her title is guest star, so she qualified and she did some amazing things with Mary this year, thus her incredible ranking in this vote.

Personally, I love what Rick Springfield did in his short time on the air.  He brought something different to Lucifer.  No, he wasn’t better than Mark Pellegrino, but it he brought some real creep factor to the role that had been missing.  But hey, that’s probably my inner 1980’s fan girl talking.

The real congratulations though goes to David Haydn-Jones who brought us something very memorable in his recurring role this season.  Mr. Ketch was a guy you loved to hate and he had a grenade launcher to prove it.  Well done sir.

Family Group Hug - “Who We Are”

I really, really, really did love the bull riding scene in “Regarding Dean.”  I howled at that for hours after it happened and I did throw a couple of votes it’s way.  But, the family group hug had all the feels and was a very rewarding way to tie up the whole slow, perplexing, and cold Mary comes back from the dead plot that was more agonizing than fun for me to watch all season.  I just love closure, especially closure that brings on the water works.  But as I said before, you can’t go wrong with the sweet sentiment of “DW” and “SW” in “The Memory Remains.”  It was a perfect and is a well deserved win.

I’ve always been a sucker for Crowley’s zingers and this one is particularly poignant since it came a little before he met his end.  He was given some real crap this season and this was a rare gem at the right time.  But Sam’s smackdown of very annoying Lady Toni before suffering some senseless torture was pretty damn pleasing.  Dean’s variation of Rorschach’s famous quote in The Watchmen won over a lot of voters as well.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED Dean finally getting to use the grenade launcher in “Who We Are” and I LOVED the reference to Lucille in “Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.”  However, those were one quick yet beautiful moment.  The amount of effort not to mention brilliant execution that went into “Stuck in the Middle (With You)” is too hard to ignore.  You could tell how much writer Davy Perez and director Richard Speight Jr. loved the work one Quentin Tarantino and pulled all the stops.  The crew must have had a blast too.   It was one for the ages.

Yeah, I cheated.  Sue me.  If any category needed an “All of the Above”, it was this one.  The was one category where I encouraged people to vote six times and pick each option.  That’s technically what I did!  The voting was really close for most of the items listed.  I definitely can’t argue with the choice made, but I can’t argue for the others not being made either.  They were all train wrecks in their own regard and the writers should be admonished for it.

It was in my reviews all season.  I belly ached over when in the Hell was Dean finally going to get to use that grenade launcher!  I even told myself that when he finally did, it would be a disappointment.  Turned out to be more satisfying that anything beyond my wildest dreams.  In the end, it had to win in my book.  But I absolutely loved the scene before it too, which was the chosen winner.  Heck, I loved every scene in that episode and it seems to be winning a lot of categories here.  It was too extraordinary and it’s amazing how much of our favorites was backed into that short 42 minutes.

This was very close for Runner-Up.  Technically, I could have listed all of the three remaining choices.  But by two votes we go with the season ender, “All Along the Watchtower.”  As for the two winners, honestly I had a super hard time choosing between the two of them.  They were both so well executed.  In the end, I chose “Stuck in the Middle (With You)” because I absolutely love Quentin Tarantino’s work and it was a brilliant way to introduce the Princes of Hell.  Too bad the whole idea was completely ruined in following episodes.  But hey, I have that gem to keep me warm when I realize there’s only about four episodes I’ll re-watch when I get the season 12 DVD set.

The horrible rip off of Harry Potter with Kendricks schools (making students fight to the death?) - “The British Invasion”

Honestly, I think trying to bring back Hitler wasn’t a completely horrible idea.  After all, it does seem like a logical extension with The Thule given their mission.  However, the execution ended up being horrible and the whole thing a waste.  It ended up existing so Dean could say some sophomoric line all the way to the next episode.  Given that, there was SOME plausibility in the plot while there was absolutely none in the completely asinine back story of Mick Davies and his schooling at Kendricks in “The British Invasion.”   The questionable nature of that backstory never explained why the British Men of Letters are so ruthless and evil.  All we were left with is…they’re British?  The British created Harry Potter so all schools must be like that.  Even the uniforms were ripoffs!  The backstory never really matched the motivations and actions of Mick’s character and was totally out in left field.  That flashback would have been way more believable if it belonged to Mr. Ketch.   Oh, and they have this code that contradicts everything we learned about them so far.  Epic fail.  Epic.

“Broomstick Cowboy” by Bobby Goldsboro - “Regarding Dean”

I should really call a mulligan here.  I only included “Carry on Wayward Son” because it was nominated multiple times.  Is it really fair to put “Supernatural’s” season ending anthem in this mix?  After all, it’s been in every season. However, I must cater to the masses.  This does pose an interesting question though, was the classic rock/music that bad this season?

Personally, I picked “Broomstick Cowboy,” just because I’ve always loved Bobby Goldsboro for no damned good reason.  He’s someone my parents listened to.  I couldn’t imagine a better song for Dean riding the bull than that one.  But that’s just personal preference. “Solitude” really deserves the prize here.  It did pack and emotional punch during the closing montage of “Keep Calm and Carry On.”  It gave us all the feels over Sam’s imprisonment and Mary’s dilemma until the next week (which then totally squandered that opportunity).

This was a really close category and an awesome suggestion by paladinteacher.  The winner was very clear, but the rest were super close.  Me, I really loved Sam’s emotional reaction to seeing the Colt after all those years, but ultimately to me the most satisfying was we finally got an update on what happened to Roy and Walt.  “Dark Side of the Moon” is one of my personal favorite episodes and my heart still skips a beat over Sam and then Dean (after issuing his threatening ultimatum that when they come back from the dead he’ll be pissed) being brutally murdered by Roy and Walt.  Leave it up to Sam to take the high road in a moment of need.  That is so Sam.  Anyway, comments have been made on this site for years asking whatever happened to Roy and Walt.  Now we know.

As for the winner, you can’t go wrong doing a callback to a signature line in the pilot, this time spoken by Sam.  It’s twelve years in the making.
