Here it is, my roundtable interview with moose himself, Jared Padalecki, from the Supernatural press room at Comic Con on Sunday.

We got to speak to Jared for nine minutes, and it started off with a nice laugh.  We were sitting next to the conference room doors and just outside a few feet from us was Jared's son, Thomas, and Mark Sheppard's son rolling around and giggling up a storm.  Jared needless to say was quite amused by it (we all were!).  He looked like he wanted to join them!  Alas, he chose to answer our questions instead.

Jared definitely gives some spoilers about season nine, including elaborating more on a big one Jensen had dropped before our talk with him.

Thank you for the great Interview !
Love listening to Jared and his side of view about show .
I'm so excited about Sam's story in S9 !

Jared is a talking fool! LOL! I think he could talk non stop for hours.

I can't wait to find out exactly what 'heals' Sam. I know Jensen had said in another interview that Dean doesnt always think things through and he's sort of put a band aid on the situation...so whatever that band aid is, I'm sure it'll pop off at some point.
Season 9 is sounding really awesome so far and I love that Jared is so psyched about it,..esp for a show going into year 9.

Bring on October!

He seems so much more excited about where the storyline is going here than he did last year. I am very excited. I hope that the "secret" involves some myth arc action for Dean as well as Sam.. that they are both involved and crucial to how the story unfolds. Loving the direction they seem to be going in.

i wonder how they'll retcon this secret. has dean known before sam went to stanford, is this why his eyes bled in bloody mary? or did john whisper more in dean's ear then what dean confessed? or maybe it's something dean learned in hell or purgatory? it's got me curious. not worried about any serious fallout though...sam may get angry at dean for a small amt of time, but sam's usually quite forgiving and tends to focus on the what do we do about stuff.

Who said anything about a retcon? I got the distinct impression the secret is about how Sam is 'cured' in episode 1 of the new season, Dean's secret is to do with what happens to get Sam that cure so the secret starts from then. Why would there be a retcon involved?

it was just a supposition really. i didn't get to hear the interview that well, the computer i am on doesn't have great sound...this time i stuck the headphones in and rewatched...not that it was such a hard thing to do...watching jared is something i can spend all day doing. i didn't realize it was a "new " secret. cool beanz any which way you slice it....very anxious to see how it plays out. like i said, not really worried about sam being upset for more than like 5 minutes when he finds out. he's always been very forgiving. i think the longest he's ever stayed upset with dean was like 10 days in the mentalist. october is such a long way away :-x

watching the interview twice :D i began to wonder if he was busting to bring up that he and gen are having another little one. so very happy for them both.

When Jensen spoke about Dean "patching the band" I thought that he was referring to the finale scene and Dean wrapping Sam's hand with a piece of rag he'd taken out of his pocket. Literally putting the band aid, that is.

can we speculate here? just thinking about what the bandaid could be and jared's comments about him changing...wond ering if the way to heal sam is with angel blood. dean would do anything to save sam. so if a way to save him is by angel blood,...well sam can get better, but having angel blood in him might bring about changes...i'm not saying sam would sprout angel feathers...but maybe, like with the demon blood, sam may be able to do things he's never done before. so in essence, sam's sojourn as a normal human could be shortlived and he can go back to being..."specia l" again...i think in this case dean would be willing to risk that, given that's it's angel blood and not demon blood..

just speculating...a lways fun to wonder and create little scenarios...eve n if they're unlikely to happen.

You know we'll probably all be wrong with whatever we're thinking anyway, right? Haha. It has to be something that Sam won't be happy about once he finds out, is what I'm getting from the spoilers. And something that is only a band aid fix. Not sure about the angel blood theory, but I've heard a few other fans say similar, so there's a lot of that thinking going around.

I haven't come to my own theory yet. I was wondering if Death would be involved, but either Jared or Carver said it was something they'd never done before...that would rule out Death's involvement, I would think. Hmm...hmmm...hmm...

Jared was dying to tell everyone what it was too. But Carver keeps a tight leash on those detailed spoilers, me thinks.

It's only July 23rd....sigh...

E, you wrote my thoughts perfectly. Surprising, I know. :D I'm so happy to see him so excited about this season too. Not that he seemed bummed last year, but definitely not this enthused. Is it really Pollyannaing to hope that this secret that Dean kept has something to do with Sam's missing months and that's why Jared is so exuberant? I think he had a hard time wrapping his head around Sam not looking. So I can see him being really happy with an explanation.

nappi, what I found interesting is that what he said about knowing they had a next season earlier meant that they could continue the storyline through into the next year. That really supports your theory about picking up THE storyline from S8.

Not well-thoughtout idea- Crowley tells Dean what happened to Sam. Crowley had a hand in it or just knew all along. But Sam no longer remembers. But there is something he did during that time that can be used to help him now. But Dean doesn't want to tell him because he did or was manipulating into doing something that was bad. Something that Dean can also use to save him. Dream of dreams. It is also something that explains Bobby being in Hell. Where Benny learned how to get out of Purgatory. ETC ETC.

I'm really pulling for a spell with a side effect, like Sam grows a tail. Painful at first but he won't ever need to give Dean the "bitch-face" again, just the swishing of the tail will tell the ...er...tale. Sorry.

Hi Kelly... yes, there we go.. thinking alike again! :).
Yes, I was stoked at how genuinely excited Jared seemed this time around. It's not that he wasn't excited last year, but I think you are right, he seemed confused... and I got the sense that he was tap dancing in his interviews and didn't seem all that comfortable with what he knew about his proposed story line, and lordy knows none of the rest of us were comfortable with it either!

I love all this speculation. I want Dean to be actively involved in this secret though; I hope that he doesn't just know something, I hope that he is doing something that ties him in and has him experiencing repercussions as well. Although I am a Samfan through and through, and I love, protective Dean with all my heart, I do want to see Dean more actively involved this season.

I had a couple of thinky thoughts; what if Naomi revealed more to Dean than they let us see in season 8? That she explained to Dean more about the trials and their effects and how to fix it than was shown and we'll get that info in season 9 ? I also wondered; what if Sam's blood wasn't really purified? Maybe that's another trick of Metatrons (seeing as he seems to have set up the whole angel trial thing in the first place) and Sam has been feeding Crowley his Azazel tainted blood this whole time.... I wonder what that would do to/for the king of hell....hmmmm.

I am very hopeful that we will get some more information on Sam's missing months and his decision to Not Look For Dean that will make more sense in the grand scheme of things. At least that is my hope.

Angel blood would be interesting. Poor Sam, all he wants is to not be a freak and people keep putting stuff in him that just makes him freakier.

The only issue I have with Dean healing him with angel blood is where would Dean get it? Cas is human and I don't know if Dean has an angel detector so he can find one of the fallen angels. But hey, the trunk of the Impala holds everything they need so maybe Dean DOES have an angel detector or a vial of Cas's blood squirreled away.

I'm glad Jared is excited about this year.

Oh I completely agree. I want his connection to the myth arc to be much more direct this season (I don't want him to lose the protective nature, cause I adore it too, but have it be more evenly balance. So this year Dean stuff with Sam being protective). I don't think Sam or Dean girls would gripe about that. Most of the bitter Sam girls that I've read are mad about the same thing I am (even though I consider myself just Team Winchester-bibr o still sounds vaguely dirty to me :D ) So I think if they clear up the missing time and make Dean's involvement more direct everyone will be happy, right? ;-)

But really just for storyline purposes I think it would be great to link the missing time to Dean's "secret". Because while I really like your Naomi idea I worry that it will seem like another "convenient" revelation. But if they can link it to stuff that happened throughout last season, it will seem more earned to me. I was thinking perhaps Sam's missing time and Dean's secret might contain some morally ambiguous moves. So that is why Dean doesn't want Sam to know about it. Both because he doesn't want Sam to feel like a failure again and because he doesn't want him to know about Dean doing something shady.
KELLY
# KELLY 2013-07-23 17:58
Oh and nappi, I could see your angel blood idea having a lot of potential. I would kind like to see Dean doing something that effected him as well as Sam though. Besides feeling that the characters need a twist to balance things out. Some of the Dean fans would have an attack if Sam ended up with powers again :D

i also noticed that jared was much more excited and happier during this comic con than that of last season. i know he's got a new little one on the way, so he's probably pretty excited anyway, but he seemed to me to be pretty stoked. so of course being the ever hopeful optimist, i can't help but wonder if that peace he seems to have this time around may come from knowing that sam, who's behavior was a tad ooc last season, may actually have the chance to explain what truly happened in those unaccounted for three months from when he left the lab til he hit the dog.

as i've stated, i understand now what carver was trying to do. carver brought sam and dean to a place they've never been to regarding ea. other..they really see ea. other for the first time. now it didn't go unnoticed that nothing was actually resolved, but before that step can happen, the first step had to happen....that' s what s8 did...it gave sam and dean the chance to take that step.

the season finale is usually part one of a part 2 eppy. sacrifice was definitely only a part one. the story continues from there...so there's no reason to believe that the unanswered questions from s8 won't be dealt with in s9.

i still have faith that we'll find out more about who was watching sam...and if it's like someone above said, that maybe crowley is the one who spills the beans to dean, then i don't see it out of the realm of possibility that the overcoat worn by the figure was crowley's.

i just think that answers will come. not to everything but to some things. and i look forward to this season to find out ..........every thing.

nappi, the big secret has got me really intrigued. I'm hoping it is something really cool and connected to missing months and I have a huge list of things I would like cleared up and would be overjoyed to find some of them linked to the secret like they were planning it all along, even if some (or all) weren't. Happy accidents I believe Carver said in an interview. Great shows, even this one, are full of them and I have zero problem with them as long as they are done well.

The whoever in the coat would be on the list as would of course Sam's missing time. And his odd behavior at Dean's return.
As well as the reverse exorcism thing.
How Benny knew about how to get out of Purgatory.
It is not really a continuity error or anything, but I would be ecstatic to find that there was more to Don not being dead than that lame soap opera story we got.
Crowley's different backgrounds.
Why Bobby was in Hell (cause that explanation made NO sense)
The difference in the reapers and Hell and why Purgatory was so easy to get in and out of now. Pretty much all of Taxi Driver.
Grand Canyon trip.

I was trying to work out a theory that included some of these. I think Metatron knowing a lot more than he let on is a HUGE possibility. I also thought he might be a third player that was trying to manipulate Sam. Along with Naomi and Crowley. And he loves a good story. So what if he was moving "his characters" around not only to get his desired results but also to create a better story.

If he knew that Crowley was on the path to find the angel tablet, he might have started devising his plan. He wouldn't need the tablet or the prophet, since he wrote the tablet. But he does need someone to complete the tasks. Because perhaps like the trials, one angel had to carry them all out and lose his grace in the possess. So he wouldn't interfere with Crowley necessarily but he definitely wouldn't want Naomi to get her hands on it. And he picks Cas to complete the trials for him. Perhaps he really does admire him for his questioning of orders and following his own path.. He also wanted Cas to CHOOSE to do it. So Naomi rescues Cas (how they could do it not withstanding) from Purgatory but she will not be helpful in getting Cas to do what he wants. So knowing Cas getting out is inevitable Metatron tells Benny how to get Dean, because Dean has always had a rebellious effect on Cas.

But why would Metatron care if Sam hunted or not?
So my guess is that Crowley and his angel pal did something to Sam. Maybe something evolving Crowley's magical background. A spell to....any thoughts?

I'm actually worried that Dean might have given him demon blood to cure him because he was desperate. If Sam thought he was being purified and Dean did that, he'd be pretty pissed (understatement ). Can you imagine, after all Dean's negative reactions about it, in fact the whole STORY LINE for Sam since season 4, if he did that? Yikes. I really hope not, only because I hated the demon blood story line, but I could see them doing it.

Kelly and Sylvia,
I love both of your theories... so much potential in all of it! Can't wait to find out what it really is, as long as it's cool I'll be fine with it no matter what pans out. Supernatural has always had a way of surprising us, so I hope that what they end up with is out of left field and way cool. They rarely do what's expected, and even when they do what's expected they usually do it in a strange and interesting way. Nice theories ladies!

I can't imagine them going that route. I don't think it'll be a rehash of an old idea, esp something that caused the biggest riff between the boys and caused Sam to go partial dark-side for a time. Interesting theories; can't see them going the demon blood or demon route, though. If you remember, Dean said he'd rather see Sam die human then become a monster. Gonna throw another one out there; from the non-spoilery stuff they said, it sounds as though someone or something intervenes in healing Sam (or putting a band-aid on the problem) and that Sam will be going thru some changes throughout the season. Since they already said we'll never guess, which means we'll be spending the rest of the hellatus trying to guess, that kind of rules out any sort of demon/demon-blo od/Lucifer thing.

Logically, the only player left on the board that would have the mojo to help Sam, and might be willing to do something, is Death. Death has already intervened a couple of times. An added bonus; I think Death is the only Supernatural creature that both scares the crap out of Dean, and on some level, Dean has some respect for. Their prior interactions were great.

As far as the changes that Sam is going thru, wouldn't venture a guess other than to say it might involve heaven and/or angels?
Tim the Enchanter
# Tim the Enchanter 2013-07-24 15:27
I don’t think they’ll go the blood route either (though if it were a choice between demon blood and angel blood I’d go with the demon blood any day because individually and collectively the angels have screwed over Sam and Dean a hell of a lot more and a hell of a lot worse than any demon). I don’t see TPTB putting Dean into that type of situation. Plus, it wouldn't bode well for him (or anyone) if he did considering what happened the last few times that Sam or Dean made deals and/or worked with demons.

I think if the secret is that Dean does something to cure Sam (and I don’t know if it does because different reports kinda say different things) then maybe it’ll be something akin to the demon deal except maybe with angels ie maybe they want him to lead them back to heaven or something like that. Though it probably won’t be that because reports say (I think) that the circumstances surrounding this secret come about in the first episode.

So, to sum up, I really don’t have a clue!

Well I am going to stick my neck out and say that so far the spoilers are all working for me. All the actors are talking about next season being about what makes each of their characters tick, why they do what they do and what they want out of it. And all of them are talking from the point of view of 'I love my character and I will protect him for all I am worth' - Misha and the humour/pathos of Castiel. Jensen talking about how he and the show writers discuss his character all the time and keep it true to what Jensen wants (or at least to what he doesn't want anyway). Mark Sheppard who I bet knows as much about the show's mythology as any of them.
And then there is this video ... with more enthusiasm per square inch than anything I have ever seen. Jared sells this so amazingly. If the new season is as good as he seems to think then it ought to be a blast. Last year he was so serious and toeing the line and had a pre-rehearsed speech (to the extent that some of the speech (the taco-in-another -town bit) has become canon in people's minds) comparatively speaking he couldn't be much different here. Why can't we have this person on screen? (Because then it wouldn't be Season8!Sam eilf!)
Anyway I don't feel that I know much more about Sam's storyline than Dean's as yet so I am going to assume that for everyone (Castiel and Crowley too) it is less mytharc-y and more character driven and there will be less silent treatment than we have seen for a while ... and oh, that works for me :-)

eilf, I'm really not sure if it was the spoilers working for me or just Jared's enthusiasm for them. But it doesn't matter because he's got me excited for the premiere, regardless.

sylvia, I don't really see them going the DB route either(maybe angel) because detoxing from it almost killed Sam, so giving him more seems risky when he is already weakened but I suppose it is possible.

Yeah :D Possibly the hyper excitableness (the spellchecker doesn't like that word) of a new (soon to be again) daddy isn't the best indication of what might happen .. but at the very least we can hope that the stuff we didn't like from last season has now happened and won't happen again :-?

How often to you see an actor so excited about a now 9 year old show? Ha! It's great to watch him.

He also mentions briefly about how he is protective of "Sam", similar to what Jensen said recently about how he cares about Dean and is protective of his character...so they try and stay involved in the development of those guys. Fun interviews this year.

Yes, it is possible something with Metraton, or something that is written in the angel or in the demon tablet, BUT WHY WOULD THIS BE SO AWFUL DEAN FELT HE MUST KEEP IT A SECRET FROM SAM? My reaction to the Comic Con interviews:
1) They all sound reasonably excited, but hey, they're actors - Selling an emotion is what they do. Not sure how reliable that is, because they've only read the first few scripts.
2) Another secret kept by one of the boys from the other. Been there done that.
3) Sure hope this 'secret' does not involve yet another miracle cure or "supernatural" influence for Sam.
4) There were no WTF spoiler hints this year (unlike last year where they announced Sam didn't look for Dean - and then we went through 23 episodes without an explicit answer as to how or why that happened)....

Bottom line - I didn't reach my breaking point. I'll tune in for the premiere, and hope like heck it all makes sense without pissing me off.

:-) Hey st50. I completely understand your leeriness and skepticism!
1) True enough, but we have seen them every year at these events and Jared, in particular, seemed to be more excited than I have seen him in awhile. Maybe it is the impending fatherhood (again), who knows?
2) In spite of their hopefully better relationship, I have a feeling that won't ever completely disappear. It just seems to be part of their makeup. It is usually about protecting the other one or being fearful of disappointing the other one.
3) I think that might be the only way to get Sam back on his feet! Unfortunately. Having him be sick for a long string of episodes doesn't seem that good of an idea either. I am not sure they can please people with either solution. :-)
4) Yay, so far so good!
Glad you will be with us for the premiere! And hopefully beyond.

Just loved Ale's idea of Dean sharing with Sam. Like what Cas did when he shared and took Sam's insanity back in season 7. So Cas could have taught Dean how to do the thing before they parted in Sacrifice. Or, since we know that Bobby is coming it may mean ... No, on second thought, if Bobby could cure Sam why make it a secret? I can't stop thinking of this!

Wellllllll....a ny of you who follow Jim Beaver on Twitter knew that Bobby was back at some point...looks like it's for the season 9 premiere. He posted a pic of him as Bobby last night. SO....now, does the Sam gets fixed deal have anything to do with Bobby? Gotta wonder. It would be something Sam would get upset about at some point, 'using' Bobby or whatever the guess might be. Is Bobby a fallen angel? And some how Dean can use him to fix Sam? Dunno, and we're all guessing, but the fact that Bobby is there for the first eppy...

Is Bobby a fallen angel? And some how Dean can use him to fix Sam? Dunno, and we're all guessing, but the fact that Bobby is there for the first eppy...

You must be right, this is certainly not a coincidence! What if Dean used the power of Bobby's soul to cure Sam? And what would this do to Bobby - like kill him, kill him, forever?

well i guess it is feasible to go that route. if bobby has something to do with healing sam and that's a big if...then i wouldn't want it to be anything as silly and cartoony as bobby going into sam, temporarily, until dean finds a way to find an actual cure for sam.

but i do see it possible for bobby to sacrifice himself for sam, much like the way mary did in home. if bobby could heal sam by the power of his soul but in essence it would mean bobby would disappear, as mary did, forever, i'm down with it. it would be well worth the sacrifice. it would also explain jared's excitement about the changes sam goes through and his statement about doing it justice. if bobby's soul was a way to heal sam, but it was the last time tthey see bobby...sam might get upset, but then as jared stated, sam wants to live. the changes he might experience could be a little bit of "bobby" in sam. not that bobby is actually in sam...what i mean is sam could experience side effects and possibly "act like bobby" at times. i'm not saying it's a long lasting effect. i wouldn't want sam to be anyone but sam...but maybe for a few eps, sam might behave sort of "bobby like". then in time, the side effect wears off.

this scenario is the only one that i think isn't all that cartoon like if indeed they go that route.

i still don't think it's necessarily true that just because bobby is on in the premiere, he has anything to do with healing sam.

but it's certainly fun to speculate...giv es us something to do in the meantime.

Perhaps it's possible that TPTB are trying to cleverly mess with us. Film # 2 first because apparently a specific person was not available for the premiere. Bobby is apparently not in episode #2 but he is in episode # 1. There have been references to using the power of your soul. Dean does something or agrees to something that he feels needs to be kept from Sam. There will be some lasting consequences to Sam. Perhaps they are just trying to misdirect so the surprise will be kept intact. Ah....anxiety be thy friend.

In Houses of the Holy they said that people couldn't become angels, that it didn't work that way. Now they might have a retcon for this but it would be somewhat annoying! :-?
I suppose that if they decided to angelize Sam (dear Chuck don't let them do that!!) since he was doing the trials that might be different but Bobby died normally so there is no reason why he should be an angel.
It does lead you to wonder if the other heaven souls are going to be walking the earth too? Gonna be a little crowded!
Maybe Bobby was still in the angel offices going through the pearly gates entry system (like trying to get a visa) and got in Metatron's way while he was taking over and so got flicked down to earth too?

How often to you see an actor so excited about a now 9 year old show? Ha! It's great to watch him.
So true! In an interview posted by Carla Day of Buddy TV, Jared talked about the 'secret' and how excited he was about the new season, basically giving the same answer he gave to Alice in the interview above, but in slightly different language that offered up a few more (tantalizing) clues.

When asked ‘What are you most excited for fans to see this season,’ Jared answered: “I am effing thrilled that I get to do something that I thought Jeremy and Bob were going to bring up in the panel, and they didn’t so I can’t talk about it. But the way Sam…heals–I have to choose my words carefully–the way Sam heals involves a big secret between Sam and Dean, that Sam is not aware of, and Dean keeps from him, but we’ll see Sam going through a change–change s–regularly†“ that I can’t wait for. I think the fans… I think the fans are gonna love it. If they don’t love it, it’s because I’m doing a bad job, not because it’s not cool. It’s made me more excited to shoot this season than I’ve ever been, ever. So, it’s cool…it’s really cool. It’s like a…wet dream, seriously – and not just because I sweat!”

i love seeing jared so excited..it is really quite different from his interviews last season. he no longer seem's concerned as he was before regarding sam. he's genuinely excited. his excitement is quite contagious because he's got me excited as well.

the more i think about it the more i think bobby is not involved in sam's healing. bobby is in heaven, and unless a deal is made, i can't see bobby returning. he doesn't have a body to return to and he pretty much declared in tgwtdadt that once gone, stay gone. unless bobby hitched a ride on one of the falling angels, i don't see how bobby would play a role in the healing. i do think bobby plays a role in heaven. i just don't think his return is about healing sam.
dean tends to hide things from sam because he either a)wants to protect sam or b) does something sam is not going to like.

i think maybe dean does something sam's not going to like. i can see dean's method of healing sam more along the lines of dealing with someone shady. like a witch or some other being not to be trusted.

sam originally was psychic. he believed his psychic abilities came from yellow eyes and once he died, it was all over. ruby told sam that he never needed the feather. it was inside him all the time. ruby led sam to believe that demon blood gave him his abilities so he would drink the blood. the blood really only was preparing sam's body to be a vessel and gave him a bit of oomph.

what if sam is and always has been psychic and whatever/whoeve r heals sam, awakens sam's original psychic abilities. i mean if sam was always psychic then it would explain how he was able to do a reverse exorcism when sam supposedly has been out of the hunting game for a year. it might also explain some other stuff sam knew but he has no idea how he knows it...like how the kid was hardwired for prometheus' curse. sam's contact with God's light/energy could enhance sam's original abilities to a more advanced level.

.

i'm trying to think what would seem cool for sam to do, that show never really let them explore before.

then again, i'm probably way off here. but still i do love the try and guess what the hell is gonna happen game....

Hi nappi, its very interesting your explanation and I'm agree with you about Sam's ability because the show has never explained some stuff like the mathematic faster than he had done at the beginning of S8 or bent the spoon in the episode The Mentalist in S7. Probably is something that Sam has always be afraid, anyway I like to see Jared so excited, it's a pleasure.

In some Comic Con Interviews of Mark Sheppard and Misha Collins, Misha alluded to the fact that Mark Sheppard was not available and that's why they had to shoot out of order

If I remember Houses of the Holy, the priest said that people can't become angels so I don't consider that canon (besides, Anna became human, didn't she?). That being said, the angel thing would be too obvious.so that won't be the way they're going.

Since Castiel said he couldn't heal Sam, that means angels can't help him so I'm thinking it's got to be a bigger player and, since God has "left the building", and all the archangels are gone, that leaves Death, or someone/somethi ng we haven't seen before.

Totally playing devils advocate here because I am not really worried if they make a human becoming an angel canon (as long as they don't do it to Sam or Dean)
AND
on the understanding that SPN canon has really gotten pretty thin and is somewhat tied together with vinegar and brown paper. (I think we need a word for "knowing that canon can be ignored by the PTB when it suits them and trying to have complex discussions relying on it anyway")
Then I grant you that what one priest says may not be actually true and may or may not be considered canon :D
But what IS canon (maybe we should have a thread on that)?
Here is my take on it. Canon is what we see actually happen OR is what we are told by characters in the show to be the case. Until any piece of lore is contradicted down the line surely we have to assume that the person most expert on a subject is the one who is correct about it and that makes it 'canon'? Otherwise how can we learn anything about a world?
Here is my reasoning for saying that HOTH is currently canon on this point:
The basic requirement to be a Catholic priest includes:"at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in a field such as religious studies or philosophy, and pursue a graduate degree from a Catholic seminary. .. As part of seminary, priests take courses in biblical theology, philosophy, liturgy, prayer and counseling."
In other words priests pretty much know what they are talking about when it comes to theology (any ones I have met seem to have the equivalent of PhD's in it).
In HOTH Sam and Dean considered angels to be on a level with unicorns and they had almost NO knowledge of them. Therefore I say that the priest's lore is currently the strongest evidence regarding people becoming angels.
Supernatural creatures are bound by sets of rules that don't apply to people which is why people don't always lose against them. Whether the ghost in HOTH was bound by a rule that DID apply to him (that he cannot be an angel) or that he BELIEVED applied to him I suppose we will find out. Convincing a ghost of something to destroy it HAS been done - like in Yellow Fever.
What is going to most likely prove you right and me wrong is that Metatron said that Castiel is now human. Is an angel becoming human the inverse of a human becoming an angel? For me I don't think so because with the only example we have to date (Anna) she had to remove something she already had (her grace) and be reborn, she was also somewhat more than human even without her grace and she reverted to angel pretty easily. Of course Castiel is still in an adult body with maybe 2 souls (since 'humans' have to have souls therefore angels must have souls or an fallen angel gets a soul from somewhere or an angel is 100% soul or an angel gets the use of the soul in the body it is possessing in order to be human :o ) and now my head is starting to hurt because the story of Anna and the story of Castiel are different, they don't follow the same logic (see earlier comment about canon).
I think my point is that if they had thought all this out ahead they would never have made that point in season 2 and left it as definitive and unargued for 6 seasons. :-)

Just a thought...

RE: Canon...Jensen said at a Con once that sometimes the writers write themselves into a corner and have to do things to get unstuck in order to keep the series going. I suspect that means breaking canon at times.

eilf,

i agree that humans can't become angels (and they aren't going to go that direction any way - too obvious and ham-fisted). Just saying that a priest (who, when he first saw the bright light appear, did think it was an angel) saying it is so does not establish it as canon. Your thought about what dictates canon would make a great topic on the site.

I see canon regarding the Supernatural lore very much like Science: something is impossible to do, until Science discovers a way to do it. Or something is the absolute truth until it is discovered that no, not exactly.

Knowledge is the most important weapon in SPN. It's being so since the beginning, with the importance they put in the hunter's diaries - John's diary was his most precious possession and he passed it on to his boys. Because you can't fight monsters if you don't know how - how to kill them, how to control them.

God's hell trials make perfect sense to me. I see the message as this: you know how to save people form Hell deals (kill hellhound); you know how to save innocent people from Hell and you know how to cure demons. But still, you want to shut them all away in Hell - you're clearly revenge driven, not save the world. It's fair that you die doing it.

Though for the sake of my sanity, I hope that it doesn't have to be used to often.

nappi, I think that Bobby helping out in Heaven is a great idea.
