The season premiere kicked off in an explosion of questions and very few answers, piling mystery upon of mystery. Let’s quickly recap what we found out and then take a look at what’s coming this week.
THEN
A year has past and Dean’s back from Purgatory. He carried out new buddy, Benny, via the “soul train” and performed a resurrection spell to bring Benny back to “life.” Benny’s a vampire, so Dean’s become pals with a monster from Purgatory and in a you help me, I’ll help you scenario they travelled together through a portal back to the human world. It looks like their relationship started via wary convenience, but their joking and affectionate terms along with the hugging, shows they’ve since become friends and allies. However, once back in the land of the living they go their separate ways, after agreeing that this would be goodbye. But it seems Benny’s not content to end the friendship there and contacts Dean at the end of the episode, so we know this is a relationship that isn’t ending anytime soon.
Cass is places unknown. Dean doesn’t outright say he’s dead, but it’s implied, and as it’s only implied, we’ve got to assume Cass is not dead! Something went on in Purgatory that Dean isn’t talking about and I'd bet my bottom dollar it involves Cass. He says to Benny, that he doesn’t regret what happened in Purgatory, that they did what they had to do, but he wants to keep his distance, my guess is to ensure he can keep certain Purgatory facts, along with Benny, hidden from Sam.
Sam says he’s given up hunting and has been out of the family business for a year, trying to live a life with a woman called Amelia and a dog that he hit with the car. The big shocker is, Sam didn’t try to find Dean when Dean vanished before his eyes. But Sam is as equally evasive as Dean about their year apart and we’ve got to assume that means something more is going on. They both tap dance around the details. But at least they’re talking.
Even though he says he’s out of the game, Sam still has the Impala’s trunk fully stocked. He slid out on his girlfriend in the middle of the night to visit Rufus’ cabin. It all seems very mysterious. But by apparently turning his back on the family business there was an immediate consequence; Sam never heard the Prophet Kevin’s pleas for help. Once these pleas are finally heard, Sam and Dean team up again, jump in the Impala and go in search of the missing Kevin Tran.
Kevin escaped Crowley’s clutches and has been on the run for a year. He’s had to hole up and stay off the radar, because he knows a great big secret. Kevin has stashed a God tablet that gives the instructions as to how to close the gates of Hell, trapping all the demons inside forever and Kevin is the only one who can read it. When Kevin reunites with the Winchesters, the King of Hell is only hours behind them. But our heroic threesome manage to escape, unfortunately Kevin’s girlfriend doesn’t….
Fired up with a quest, a belly full of vengeance and a car full of questions, Sam and Dean and Kevin hit the road…..
Oh, and there was a shadowy lurker outside of Sam’s house…..who or what was watching?
NOW
Wow, a lot happened in the opening episode of the season! What a set up. So many questions and so much mystery… so what’s in store this week?
The official synopsis reveals that Kevin, now terrified that Crowley is going to systematically kill those he loves, talks Sam and Dean into going and checking on his mum. When they arrive, they find her in peril and rescue her. They then hit the road on their quest for the God tablet. Sam and Dean have a mum in the backseat….this is going to be interesting. I have a feeling, four’s gonna be a crowd!
The promo shows us that the Winchester brothers, Kevin and Mrs Tran wind up at an auction that appears to be selling all sorts of supernatural objects, including the Word of God tablet. In one scene it looks like Sam is whipping around Thor’s hammer! There’s fighting and if you have a good look, flashes of Dean in Purgatory, so expect more Purgatory flashbacks… Crowley is present, I’d say bidding on the tablet…and I think Mrs Tran might punch him out! Yay!
It sounds like you have to bid more than money…like your soul…that’s a pretty steep price.
I had a little thought about the Word of God tablet that gives instructions on closing Hell’s gates. We know that there’s always a side effect to everything the boys do. Everything good they accomplish, they accomplish at a price, whether it’s Sam going to Hell, or Dean going to Purgatory. So what if, when the gates of Hell are shut…every soul that has ever resided there is locked in, forever….including the souls that have escaped. What if every soul that’s ever been to Hell, is dragged back and locked up? I know a couple of brothers who might be affected by that and their dad (wherever he may be). It was just a thinky thought. Be a nasty side affect though and maybe price to high to pay.
But I digress!
We also have preview clip, which shows our foursome arriving at the headquarters for the auction and having to pass through a metal detector.
Sam, Kevin and Mrs Tran all pass through with no drama, but Dean. Oh Dean. Yeah, every bell goes off when Dean walks through. We then see him hand over what appears to be a ridiculous amount of weaponry (though maybe they’re not all his) including….the demon killing knife (and a ninja throwing star…please let them use a ninja throwing star). Sam usually carries the demon killing knife and we saw Dean hand it to Sam in the premiere episode. I guess, as Sam was obeying the rules he didn’t take the knife this time…Dean on the other hand…did.
That’s a pretty damn valuable supernatural object right there. Dean rightly looks worried about putting it in the box with the other weapons – including his Colt 1911 - saying, “I’ll be back for this.” Let’s hope they don’t lose that knife. With so many demons on their asses, they really need that knife.
It’s kind of cool having the demons back don’t you think? I really love the demons and they are so intrinsic to the mythology of “Supernatural”. I mean, they are the reason this whole thing started in one way or another… I’m pretty jazzed that it looks like they’re going to play a big part in this season.
The preview clip is pretty innocuous, it doesn’t really give us much, unless it’s pointedly showing the knife because the knife is about to go walkabout. Other than that, the only thing it shows us is that Dean is very conscious of going through a metal detector. Bless his cotton socks as he pops his hands over the Winchester family jewels! I have to say I laughed so hard when I saw this clip. I wonder if that was in the script or all Jensen.
So that’s the set up for this week. The quest for the Word of God continues as the Winchesters and the family Tran team up. I hazard a guess that we’ll also slowly unravel some of the secrets surrounding the boys. I also think…we’ll see more of Purgatory and possibly, a certain someone….
